Help Bring Nyx Home — Life’s Short. Save the Dog.
Asking for help does not come easily to us. My fundraising efforts have always been for other causes, individuals dogs, and rescues.
Today, however, I am asking for help for our own dog.
Nyx is our young Turkish Kangal, not even one year old. What began as severe gastrointestinal illness quickly became a life-threatening emergency. After multiple veterinary visits, an overnight hospitalization, worsening bloodwork, and an emergency transfer, surgeons discovered a perforation near the junction of her stomach and duodenum.
The damage was far more severe than anyone initially thought and sepsis had set in.
Nyx underwent emergency surgery just after midnight on July 16th. The damaged tissue had to be debrided and the perforation repaired in an extremely difficult location. Her abdomen was flushed, and a drain was placed so her medical team could continue monitoring for infection or leakage.
She remains hospitalized at Eastern Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Center in Allentown, PA.
We are desperately hoping to bring her home soon, but she is not there yet. Her abdominal drain is still in place, and she is still being weaned from intravenous pain medication and fluids. She continues to require hospitalization, bloodwork, medications, testing, and close monitoring while we wait to see whether the repair will hold and her body will heal.
Before arriving at Eastern Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Center, we had already paid:
$707 for her first visit to Wallenpaupack Veterinary Services
$354 for her second visit
$3,354 for her overnight hospitalization at Catskill Veterinary Services
The initial estimate we signed for Nyx’s emergency surgery and hospitalization was at Eastern was $9,899. That estimate was prepared before the surgeons discovered the severity of the damage, the complexity of the duodenal repair, and the need for additional days of hospitalization, testing, medications, drainage, and intensive supportive care. We do not yet know what the final bill will be but $12,000 is what we anticipating.
Bob did not want us to start a fundraiser. Neither of us is comfortable asking for help. We have always believed that bringing an animal into our family meant accepting responsibility for whatever came with them, and we are doing everything within our power to meet that responsibility. Sadly, this is bigger than we were prepared for, and Nyx deserves every possible chance to survive, heal, and come home.
She is still fighting.
We are not asking anyone to give more than they can afford. A donation of any amount will go directly toward Nyx’s existing veterinary bills, ongoing hospitalization, medications, follow-up testing, and recovery care. Sharing this fundraiser is also an enormous help.
