Hello, dear friends and family,
Before they fled their homes, refugees weren’t refugees at all.
They were people who, like me and perhaps you, might have loved their children and hated Monday mornings. Maybe they felt joy riding a bicycle or a skateboard. Perhaps they were busy with their careers. Maybe they valued food, family, friends, and living with a sense of purpose.
Who knows?
Because refugees are as diverse as any other group of people with many, many more nuanced tales than the prevailing narratives suggest, and these tales are best told by the people themselves.
So, with your help, after crisscrossing the globe with my camera on behalf of NGOs and nonprofits for a couple of decades, this year, I'll be handing the camera over to the people themselves, beginning with a small group of refugees in Greece who've asked to learn the skills to tell their own video stories.
Together with RBB, a beloved organization that has been providing urgent humanitarian aid in Greece for eight years, I'll be piloting a video training workshop that can be replicated in other areas. The participants will learn to tell their own stories, and we'll help amplify them by working closely with our connections in the media, politics, and international relief agencies.
Not only will we help give voice to individual refugees in an effort to change the refugee narratives we've seen destroy people and their families, but also we’ll be providing each individual participant with a job skill.
