On Wednesday April 26th, my grandpa Darrell was driving his UTV near his home when the vehicle unexpectedly caught on fire.
He was eventually able to get out of the vehicle, but unfortunately he was badly burnt while doing so. He has 2nd and 3rd degree burns to approximately 16% of his body.
He was taken via Airlife helicopter to the U of U burn center. He is expected to be in the hospital for at least a month and will be undergoing multiple surgeries to treat the burns.
We would like to extend our gratitude to Payson Fire Rescue, the Airlife team and the neighbors who all played a vital role in caring for my grandpa during his accident. As well as the team at the U of U burn center for the continued care and treatment.
We are grateful that he survived the accident, but he has a long road to recovery, as well as the financial burden of medical and recovery costs.
A severe burn can easily cost a victim more than $1 million. This is because severe burns are usually treated in a special burn center. There, patients are treated with extra fluids, blood transfusions and skin grafts, all of which help speed up the healing process. If a victim is suffering from complications from the burns, they may also recuperate in trauma centers in major hospitals. A complication from a burn can easily add tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to a medical bill.
The donations will go towards medical expenses such as transportation via ambulance and helicopter, reconstructive burn surgeries, extended hospital stay, post surgery care such as physical therapy treatments and prescriptions, as well as alleviating costs (transportation, time off of work, etc) for the family that is caring for my grandpa during this hard time.
