Hi. I'm Frances Danger (unless you're the government; then my name is Frances Herrod) and that's my knee (but not for long).

I'm a Mvskoke Semvnole Native Rights Advocate who also commits random acts of journalism. You may know me from my words in The Oklahoma Gazette & Mvskoke Media, my 4 appearances as a black amorphous blob in the background of Reservation Dogs, or from a 5 year old picture of me holding up a pie that really makes colonizers mad every Indigenous Feast Day/Thankstaking. I also have a top fans badge for kevin stitt on Facebook because I troll him so much.

I live with anxiety, panic attacks, and a case of agoraphobia that I'd successfully been keeping at bay until a few months ago. Despite this, and the fact that I had a big old panic attack in the airport a couple of years ago, I was accepted to The Giniw Collective Fellowship and got on a plane, flew to almost Canada, CAMPED (I'm an indoor girl), and then did it all in reverse to get home ALL BY MYSELF. To say I was feeling confident and accomplished is an understatement.

Until I tried to get off a couch a few days after I got home.

I fell on June 24 and landed on my right knee on a hardwood floor. I went to the ER where I had x-rays that confirmed I had no breaks or fractures. I was told to rest and take ibuprofen.

What I wasn't told was that I had severe degenerative tricompartmental osteoarthritis.

I continued to rest and had very limited mobility using a cane (it's got a sword in it). It seemed like it was trying to get better but 3 weeks later I felt a pop in my knee and it buckled.

On July 20, with pronounced weakness and worsening pain, I went to a different ER where I had x-rays done again. It was at this point that I was informed of the osteoarthritis. I was referred to an orthopedist and given an Rx for Norco.

I saw the orthopedist on 7/24. He tested mobility for both knees. More x-rays and a CT scan. My doctor showed me my bone Glamour Shots and asked me if my knee hadn't already been painful because I had no cartilage left and it was literally bone on bone action and probably had been for awhile. I also have a bunch of calcifications floating around, especially in back of my knee.

The osteoarthritis was so advanced that he was unable to determine what my injury from the fall was. I mean I was clearly injured but he couldn't see past the osteoarthritis to be able to say where. He also informed me that I have advanced degeneration in my left knee as well. As much as I'm a fan of sacred balance this was one matching set I really could have done without.

We discussed options for rehab: physical therapy, bracing, steroid injections. When it came down to it I was going to have to have total knee replacement surgery on both knees. There just wasn't enough of my original ones that were worth trying to save.

As most know I have been dealing with housing insecurity for a very long time. I finally got my housing assistance voucher and was intending on using funds previously raised to get my apartment, turn on utilities, and grab some basic furnishings. I've already had to dip into those funds for ER/Specialist copays, Rx (the NDN Clinic Pharmacy doesn't fill outside Rx), and Lyfts to appointments, to get my voucher extended, and to start my apartment search all over again because I'm going to have to have one on the first floor for the foreseeable future.

I'm not having surgery until I get my apartment because hustling to cover hotel every day isn't really something I'm going to be able to do while recovering.

The $2,500 ask will hopefully cover both surgeries, follow up appointments, physical therapy appointments, and any needed mobility devices (do they make black tennis balls because I'll need some for my walker). I also hope to be able to afford a bed.

You know I joked for years after my ACL replacement that since I now have a cadaver ACL I would easily survive the upcoming zombie apocalypse because, as part zombie, I could walk among them. Turns out that they remove the ACL for a total knee replacement because I'll be bionic now I guess. All I know is that if I become a zombie because of this the rage I will take out on everyone will make 28 Days Later zombies tremble.

Found out today that my trigger finger requires surgery. Trying to schedule it before total knee replacement Sept 16. Please help make it rain to relieve my pain. 🖤

I just got the call from my orthopedic surgeon's office. My tentative total knee replacement surgery date is September 16. I have to drop about 30 lbs but as long as I'm making progress when I meet with him on the 4th and my blood work, chest x-ray, and EKG are good it'll be a go.

My friend Kat is dropping off a walker for me in a few. I'm excited because I'm hoping it will relieve some of the pain from my trigger finger which has been worsening because of having to use a cane.

I had my orthopedic surgery appointment yesterday. I didn't meet the surgeon, Dr. Horst, but spoke with the PA who explained everything. The surgery will be anywhere in the next 1-3 months.

I'll meet the surgeon a couple of weeks before the surgery. I have to have some blood work done as well as a chest x-ray and EKG to make sure I'm healthy enough for surgery. I'll also have a CAT scan which will be used to measure my bones to ensure a perfect fit. It's done by robots and will happen both before and during my surgery to make any real time adjustments that I may need.

Surgery will take about an hour and I'll have at least an overnight stay in the hospital, possibly two depending on how I tolerate everything.

I'll use a walker for approximately 2 weeks and have home health care for physical therapy so I don't have to go anywhere, which is perfect for me.

They gave me a huge packet to read and I'm so grateful for that. I really appreciate having an extensive reference for what to expect so I'm not using my degree in WebMD to fall down an Internet rabbit hole of worst case scenarios and misinformation. I haven't met this surgeon yet but I already trust him.

They're sending all the information to my insurance company for their approval. He said with the condition of my knees it shouldn't be a problem getting it covered. Well, as covered as it can get under my policy.

The PA told me my right knee is a D- and my left a D+. I don't think those are actual diagnostic terms but more an easy way to ensure understanding of where I fall on a scale I would know, like school grades. I told him I was used to those kind of grades and that I was going to put "consistency" under Special Skills on my resume.

My initial orthopedist Dr Easley, who confirmed the severe degenerative tricompartmental osteoarthritis diagnosis and referred me to Dr. Horst, was shocked that I hadn't been in pain prior to the fall because he couldn't even tell me where I'd injured it due to the severity of the osteoarthritis. I'd just been in pain for so long I got used to it I guess.

You can see on the x-ray the extent of the damage. The big white thing circled on my outer knee is either part of my kneecap or a huge bone spur (I'm going with bone spur since I have those on my heel and mid/lower back as well). The two sets of arrows pointing towards each other show the narrowing of the knee joint. The one on the inner part of my knee has no cartilage left. Just above that you can see that my femur juts out. It has shifted and rests directly on my tibia. Apparently I've been walking and dancing with my bones rubbing together for a few years. I've also got bits of free floating calcifications all over the place but mostly at the back of my knee.

I've got appointments with Dr Easley for my trigger finger and back bone spurs next week. I know that those require surgery too but they can hopefully be put off.

I have a long road ahead of me in terms of recovery in fixing everything that is wrong with me (Physically I mean. Y'all are just stuck with me behavioral healthwise. Sorry about that.)

I have to have all this done in OKC. I can't have them done at a tribal health facility, where they'd be free, because the ones that do these types of surgeries are 100 miles away and it's not recommended to have surgery and get driven that far home. Purchased/Referred Care (what used to be called Contract Health) won't be able to cover any of them either. Indian Health Services is chronically underfunded by the so called united states government in violation of their treaty obligations to provide healthcare and the funds they do get go towards covering costs for people with life threatening diagnoses like cancer.

Basically I'm responsible for any costs that my insurance won't cover. My sole source of income is social security disability and that only gets me through maybe the first 2 weeks of the month. I simply don't have the funds to afford my much needed medical treatment.

I have to get at least my right knee done so I can walk without pain or further damage. My left knee will have to hold out until it becomes unviable. My trigger finger is on my dominant hand and since I use that hand to grip the cane that's helping me walk it's gotten progressively worse and the pain is excruciating but I'm hoping that will be manageable once I don't have to use a cane/walker. I've had the bone spurs in my mid and lower back for years so I can put that off because while they are painful I've learned to deal with them as a fact of life.

I'd really appreciate any help with covering at least the surgery for my right knee please. I'm not completely sure how much so I just guesstimated.

Mvto for listening and for any help you can provide. I just want to be able to walk and hopefully dance again.
