Have you ever been part of a community? Flat Retreat Community, was created on October 15th, 2019, to support women who have undergone a mastectomy and have a flat aesthetic closure instead of breast reconstruction. Flat Retreat aims to empower women, celebrate their bodies and foster a sense of belonging and community. We provide a platform for women to share their stories, offer support to one another and promote flat visibility.
Despite societal pressures and misconceptions, we have chosen to embrace our bodies as they are and live life proudly. We have been shamed, criticized and judged by people questioning our femininity and choices suggesting that breast form reconstruction is necessary or that others opinions should dictate our decisions. The members of the Flat Retreat Community stand together, strong in our decision, and united in our journey as cancer survivors, warriors, motivators, advocates, inspirers, sisters, daughters, mothers, wives, and friends.
To further our mission and provide opportunities for women to connect, Flat Retreat organizes various events throughout the year. In July, we are planning a weekend retreat in Hudson Valley New York for over 40 flatties complete with a flattie fashion show. In October, we are hosting close to 100 flatties participating in International Flat Day and walking across the Golden Gate Bridge to increase flat visibility and raise awareness. Additionally, we are preparing for Flat Retreat's 5th anniversary in Palm Springs with over 30 flatties. There we will participate in the Paint El Paseo Pink breast cancer awareness walk, furthering our goal of "Flat Visibility, You're Not Alone."
These gatherings are made possible through the generosity of individuals and companies that provide crucial funds. Donations are used to support participants during the events by covering meals, morning yoga and meditation sessions, gift bags for each survivor, and healthy snacks and drinks throughout the retreats. By contributing, donors help decrease the financial burden associated with attending these life-changing events and ensure that every participant feels supported and empowered.
Flat Retreat continues to inspire and empower women, fostering a sense of community and belonging for those who have a flat aesthetic closure after a double mastectomy.
You Are Not Alone
