Hi everyone, my name is Penelope. Twelve years ago I was all by myself, living on the streets until a nice man found me and took me into his home. Not long after, my family heard about me and decided to become my forever family. Upon their surprise, I had ten puppies waiting in my tummy, who I eventually welcomed into the world where they found people to love them too. One of my sons and one of my daughters were able to stay with me, so that was really fun and exciting to watch them grow up. At my old age, I still loved going for walks, playing with my kids, and barking at the mailman. You really wouldn’t think I was almost 12 years old! For all those years I was always being loved and cared for by my people.

On the 14th of January, 2024, I was having a normal day as any other. Later that night I started feeling unusual. I went to lay down, only to feel weaker and my family to notice something was wrong. My breathing was irregular and my gums turned pale and cold. I couldn’t really get up on my own, so they carried me to the car. We ended up at the emergency vet where I was quickly examined and had to get poked with needles. It was very scary, but my family was there with me. After some time, the doctors said I have what’s called Hemangiosarcoma which is a cancer in my body. Unfortunately, this cancer had a tumor that ruptured, causing me to bleed inside. My liver and part of my spleen have this cancer and there’s nothing they can do. My family wants to make me as comfortable as possible at home until I’m ready to leave. I was hoping people would like to help my family out to make this happen. They spent a lot of money to take me to the emergency hospital and will be taking me to my normal vet also. Most importantly, when I’m ready I don’t want to go back to the scary place but stay home when it’s time to call the vet and help me say goodbye to my people and my kids. With your help, I’ll also be able to leave them with a part of me forever with my ashes.

This all happened so quickly with no warning because I was so happy. With that, it would really mean the absolute world to me if you could help my family as I get ready for bed. Thank you all so much.

Update: On January 18th, Penelope was comfortably put to rest in the warmth of her own home surrounded by her family. She was showered in cheeseburgers, fries, and ice cream while we held her 12th birthday celebration that would have been today, Valentine’s Day. On this day, we will continue to remember the love she had for her family, children, and greeting animals and humans alike. She was the sweetest dog who frequently got her way and occasionally talked back if that wasn’t the case. I’m sure she is beyond grateful for everyone who has donated and helped even in the slightest bit. Thank you all so much for your love and support.
