For most of my life, I never felt like I was good at much and then I found Circus at 12 and even then I still didnât feel good enough, but circus brought me handstands. Being able to learn and grow in this art form brought me joy and a sense of self-worth I never had. Since then I have grown into a circus artist, aerial rigger, coach, hand balancer, and so much more.
Handstands became my bread and butter, I could do them anywhere. They became my outlet, my therapy, my confidence, and one of the only places where I truly felt free and the most myself.
When life felt stressful or overwhelming, training was the thing that helped calm my nervous system and clear my head. Circus has given me community, purpose, discipline, and a version of myself that I fought really hard to become.
Over the past year, though, everything has changed.
I was diagnosed with Kienböckâs disease stage 2/3, a rare condition where one of the bones in the wrist loses blood supply and slowly begins to collapse. As someone whose entire career and passion revolve around using my hands and wrists, this diagnosis has been heartbreaking.
Things that once felt natural now come with so much pain, stiffness, and fear of never getting back to what once was. I had no other choice but to stop hand balancing and significantly reduce my circus training. I even had to give up teaching in order to give my wrist the best possible chance at healing. Which means Iâve also lost a steady stream of income.
After speaking with specialists, I was told that an MFT flap surgery may give me the best chance at saving my wrist and hopefully returning to the things I love. The surgery would transfer healthy vascularized bone from my knee into my wrist to restore blood flow and support the damaged bone.
Unfortunately, my insurance will not cover the procedure, and the surgery will cost around $35,000 out of pocket. The surgeon who Iâve been talking to is from Houston Texas so I will have to travel. After surgery I will have to stay in the hospital for 3 days before I can return home.
Making this fundraiser is honestly really hard for me because asking for help has never come naturally. But this injury has impacted every part of my life, and I know I want to fight for the possibility of getting back to the things that make me feel alive.
I know recovery will be long, difficult, and uncertain. There are no guarantees. But Iâm trying really hard not to let this diagnosis define the rest of my life. I still believe thereâs a path forward for me, and I still believe that one day Iâll be able to return to handstands, circus, and the version of myself Iâve missed so deeply this past year.
If youâre able to donate, share this page, or even just send encouragement, it would mean more to me than I can explain. Every bit of support helps bring me closer to surgery, healing, and hopefully getting back to the thing I love most.
