Thank you for your interest in joining the Virtual 5K to support the Black Lives Matter movement and to raise money for Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO). Millions of people across the United States and the world have taken the streets to raise their voices on the ongoing problem of unequal justice and inequality in this country. We need to ask ourselves how we can sustain this movement and bring about real change.

Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO) is a nonprofit in New York City that supports justice-involved young men (aged 16-24) through their Three E's: Education, Employment, and Emotional Well-Being.

GOSO focuses on the individuals’ capacities and strengths, as well as developmental needs and emotional well-being. Their aim is to promote personal, professional, and intellectual growth through goal-oriented programming and comprehensive social support services.

Their goals are to reduce recidivism for young men who have had touchpoints with the criminal justice system, divert youth from incarceration, and to support their participants as they thrive in their communities. Through their community-based program in East Harlem, they offer holistic, wraparound services to help their participants achieve success:

  • An onsite high school equivalency program, where students can earn their TASC diploma.
  • A robust employment program, GOSOWorks, which partners with dozens of employers across the city to provide paid internships for participants.
  • Dedicated staff of licensed social workers who are committed to supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of their participants.
  • Essential resources like food and clothing that contribute to participants' overall wellness.

GOSO also runs Stand Against Violence East Harlem (SAVE), an anti-gun violence program guided by the principles of Cure Violence, which leverages the experiences of members of the community to do outreach, including people who have been directly affected by gun violence.

They have a truly holistic approach to their work, which is the key to their success: fewer than 15% of GOSO participants will return to jail or prison after reentering the community. This is compared to a national average recidivism rate of over 69% for individuals in the same age group.

With concerns over COVID-19, choosing to attend a peaceful protest can be a complicated decision. You yourself or a family member may be immunocompromised, have a higher risk for illness or have other reasons why you are unable to attend. The Virtual 5K will allow you to show support and raise your voices while taking into consideration you and your loved ones health.

Dust off the old running shoes, and let's all come together, show our support and be part of the change.

I understand, that I will never understand. However, I stand.
