At Hawthorne Elementary there is a program where kids who struggle with being in large classrooms can find solace and extra support in order to achieve their personal learning goals. This year we were given an extra classroom for those extra moments when a child requires something in between a smaller solitary space and a full-blown classroom. In this extra classroom, we have soft places to land and calming activities like coloring and self-regulation tools. At the moment, however, this room is empty. It is a bit scary and bleak to land in a room that is empty. We are just now gathering items that will help greatly with our goals for filling this room, but we still need things to make it a bright, welcoming space where students can find peace. I have asked the students who will be using this room on a regular basis what they would like to see in the room and have come up with a budget to fit their needs. We would love some extra support in funding this endeavor as our school, like many others, has faced crippling budget cuts this year. Thank you to all who choose to donate to this cause! Alternatively, if anyone has any previously-owned items they would like to gift, we would gladly take any items that could be used as soft furniture, floor puzzles, green curtains, curtain rods, coloring books, and self-regulating tools. Our students have especially asked for cat-related items and large squishmallows. Thank you all for considering our cause!
