A Mother's Fight for Fairness: Seeking Justice and Stability for My Children

As a disabled veteran and mother of four, I never imagined that the greatest battle I would face would be in family court, struggling to protect my children's best interests while fighting for my rightful place in their lives. For the past two and a half years, I’ve been entangled in a high-conflict custody case that has shaken our family to the core, leaving my children torn between two worlds and myself representing my case without legal representation, simply because I cannot afford it.

The legal system in Connecticut promises fairness and equality, but without the financial resources to hire an attorney, the reality is that I am left at a significant disadvantage. Representing myself in this complex case has been an overwhelming experience—emotionally, financially, and mentally. The struggle to gather vital information about my children’s lives—medical records, therapists’ reports, unredacted police reports—has been a costly and time-consuming burden. Meanwhile, the guardian ad litem (GAL), whose role is to advocate for the children's best interests, has shown little interest in hearing my side or understanding my relationship with my children. Additionally, the opposition's relentless and unethical tactics cannot be overlooked. This has only deepened my sense of helplessness.

Family law in Connecticut and Massachusetts emphasizes the importance of co-parenting and maintaining both parents in the children's lives. Yet, I have been repeatedly denied my rightful time with my children due to my ex’s false claims and manipulation of the system. I am currently supposed to have access to my children every other weekend and ever other week in the summer with other times we mutually agree, yet even this time has been stolen through dishonest accusations and we have not agreed since we originally walked out the court. Forcing my children to call someone else 'mom' is just one example of the extreme measures taken to alienate them from me.

The mental and emotional toll this has taken on my children cannot be overstated. They deserve to have both of their parents involved in their lives, and I have never wavered in my commitment to be there for them. I believe deeply in the best interests of the children standard, which is the foundation of family law. This means ensuring they have a healthy relationship with both parents, free from manipulation and interference. However, without a lawyer to help me fight for this, I am up against a system that often favors those with the resources to navigate it effectively.

I am making this public plea not only for myself but for my children, whom I will never stop fighting for. I believe that no parent—mother or father—should have to face such an uphill battle for their rights simply because they can’t afford an attorney. Our family deserves fairness, and my children deserve to have both of their parents active in their lives. I am calling on advocates, mothers, fathers, and everyone who believes in a just system to support my fight for a level playing field.

If we truly believe in the best interests of the children, then the system must ensure that both parents have equal access to legal representation, regardless of their financial standing. My children deserve a future where they can enjoy the love and presence of both their parents. This is not just my fight—it’s a fight for fairness and justice for every parent struggling to navigate a complex family law system without the necessary resources.

I won't stop fighting for my children, and I ask for your support in standing up for what’s right.

Thank you,

Ashley Ross
