Rich is a 21 year old who was suddenly hit with severe neck pain that would lead to his ongoing hospital stay and ultimately the fight for his life. He was taken to an urgent care who sent him home with pain medicine for a "pulled muscle". Over the next two days, the severity of his symptoms led us to the ER. Within hours, he was transferred to Bethesda North hospital where he has been for five days now recieving countless MRI'S, blood tests, lumbar punctures, echos, and soon, a TEE procedure. These tests have concluded that he has an epidural absecess, an infection wrapped around the upper portion of his spinal cord that with compression could lead to brain damage along with many other complications. He has a bacterial lung infection, confirmed sepsis, gram positive cocci, MRSA infection in his blood, and an enlarged heart which has lead the team to believe he has endocarditis. He is currently recieving numerous of the worlds strongest antibiotics via multiple IVs along with an oxygen cannula to improve his low oxygen level. So long as heart surgery is avoided, once he is discharged, he will be on a long course of antibiotics through IV's for at least two months. Due to the fact that he did not previously have a health insurance plan and he does not qualify for medicaid, he and his family will be weighted with enormous hospital bills and future medical expenses for the rest of their lives.
