My name is Rabie Mohammed Kamal Abu Jahal. I am 44 years old and have five children: three daughters and two sons. I used to work as an accountant for a private company. I bought an apartment in 2017 after taking out a housing loan from the bank to get rid of the rent I had been paying for seven years. I have a son who has an autoimmune disease called nephrotic syndrome, which requires monthly treatment and ongoing tests. Our life was normal and ordinary, like anyone else's. I went to work every day and returned in the evening. Life was normal until October 7, 2023, when the war began in Gaza City, where I live in the northern Gaza Strip. We were in our apartment on December 4, 2023, at dawn. The fifth night was a very harsh and bloody night, filled with explosions and heavy shelling from warplanes and tanks. We didn't know that the tanks were so close to our house while we were inside. Suddenly, everything went dark, and we couldn't see anything. The sound of shelling and stones raining down on us, along with the sound of gunfire and screams, filled the entire house. We didn't know what had happened. I tried to escape, searching for my children, my wife, and my infant son, but I found myself unable to get up. I couldn't. That's when I realized my leg had been amputated. I had been injured and lost it instantly. The neighbors came to carry me and called an ambulance. Unfortunately, there was no ambulance service in northern Gaza at that time; the situation was very tense. I was taken by private car to the nearest hospital, where they performed the necessary procedures. My leg was amputated, and I left the hospital the next morning in a state of shock and horror, realizing I was now without a leg and would have to continue my life without it. I couldn't walk after that. Since that day, my life has changed completely. I lost my job because I can only walk with the help of crutches, and now I live a life that doesn't resemble me. I am disabled and classified by institutions as physically disabled. After I used to walk, I am now disabled and physically disabled.
