My name is Melissa. I'm organizing this with two of my mutuals for my friend Katlena. She just turned 28 on the 16th of February. She's a writer, and wonderful candle maker. Recently she moved away from abusive blood relatives to be with her long lost brother. She moved to Georgia to be closer to him.
Due to a recent hospital trip, she was diagnosed with organ failure. Over the past 6 years, the damage has become too much. She was given 6 months to a year to live. They won't help her as she has no insurance, no job, and no one to look after her after the surgery.
She lost her only job before Christmas and hasn't been able to find a job since. She's constantly trying for work.
Below I've included a list of bills and things that she desperately needs help with. She's called charities, 211, the salvation army, churches, and more. All met with the same door to the face response.
She very little food and water left, no money to wash her clothes, and no money to get a lawyer for a will. Under Georgia law when she passes and if she is unmarried, her body and belongings will go back north to her abusive family. She wants her brother to take care of this, not them.
Her medical expenses from the hospital: $4,000 due March 5th
Rent for a studio apartment: $1,300 due March 1st
Electric: $72 past due. She loses this at the end of the month. She uses a small space heater instead of gas. It barely puts out heat.
Phone: $124 past due, She loses this in 3 day
Food for a month: $150. She eats 1 meal a day, sometimes 2.
Bottled/Jugs of water: $30, the water in her apartment building is contaminated by something foul. It's corrosive and smells like oil or gas.
Anything remaining will go towards a lawyer, I'm not sure how much they are. I know my friend is terrified about what will happen if her blood relatives get a hold of her and her things.
Her brother is unable to help financially but has been a massive support emotionally. That means a lot to her. Most of her support has abandoned her minus a handful of people.
Please, help her. Share this if you can.
