Story:
Hi, my name is Valerie Etienne, and I’m asking for your support in what I hope is the final step to securing safe, stable housing for myself through the Section 8 program in Montclair, New Jersey.
After months of uncertainty, I’ve been approved for a Section 8 apartment. The unit passed inspection, the lease is prepared, and the move-in date is set for August 1st.
But now, with just days left, I’m facing a barrier that I tried to prevent from the very beginning: a $2,700 security deposit I cannot cover alone.
Here’s what happened:
In early June, I applied for Emergency Assistance through social services to help with the deposit. But the inspection process—out of my control—delayed the release of key documents like the lease, inspection approval, and address-linked voucher. The first inspection on July 10th failed. The second, and final, passed on July 21st—well after the 30-day deadline required by the agency.
Because of that delay, my deposit application was denied—not due to negligence, but because the documents simply didn’t exist in time. I am currently appealing the decision and still pursuing aid through every available agency, but many local resources have exhausted their funding.
Why I’m Asking for Help:
I’ve done everything I can to stay ahead of this process. I acted early, followed instructions, and stayed in constant communication with all involved. But now, with just days remaining, I cannot do this alone.
This apartment represents more than just shelter. It’s a place where I can finally put down roots. It’s safety. It’s dignity. It’s a future I’ve fought hard to get to—and I refuse to lose it now.
If you’re able to give—even just a small amount—you would be helping me cross this final threshold. If you can’t contribute financially, sharing this campaign can connect me with someone who can.
How the Funds Will Be Used:
- $2,700 – Security Deposit (one-time payment required to move in by August 1st)
- Any additional funds will be used for basic move-in costs like groceries, transit, and home essentials
Thank you for reading, for seeing me, and for walking with me through this.
With deep gratitude,
Valerie
