My name is Diana. Let me introduce you to the main characters of this story.

  • James, Ben, and Jen - the autistic loves of my life
  • Me, their wife, mother, and caretaker

First, Jen:

  • Jen is pregnant with her third child and is due on the 29th of September.
  • I need to get to North Carolina to tend to her twins as she recovers from her cesarean. One of her twins is diagnosed with a form of cerebral palsy and needs very specific care.
  • Her husband is in the military and maybe training away that week.
  • We need travel money to get there.

Second, James:

  • Covid has been brutally unforgiving, particularly to my husband. It has left him with serious health issues and he is currently unable to work. It took us over a year for him to heal the first time to where he was finally healthy enough to resume working. He was so excited! After about a week and a half, he came down with Covid for the 2nd time just a few months ago. He is not well. He cannot work at this time. His health needs a re-boot
  • I need time to help him heal and recover.

Third, Ben:

  • Ben has achieved much in his pursuit of a welder's certificate. He looks forward to using his skills. However, he needs a serious change from his hermit-like existence. We were exercising and stretching out when I realized that his flexibility is almost nil. He has difficulty stretching past his knees
  • He walked one mile last week, and it nearly put him out of commission. Ben has NO flexibility or endurance and also needs a reboot. I have taken both to the doctor.
  • Ben has asked me to obtain a welding machine, the one the ATC recommended for him. This way he can work when we return to Utah.

Jamie and Ben need rehabilitation. They are depressed and riddled with severe anxiety. They need to walk, stretch, breathe fresh air and get plenty of sunshine. These are the doctor's orders. And Jennifer needs immediate assistance.

Oh, and where we're living in Utah is being sold, so we must move. That's a story with its own challenges. With all these setbacks, it has become necessary to get creative.

I'm taking the next two days to put our home into storage, pack up our car, and begin driving to NC.

My family's autistic nature and their need for routine and order will make this a somewhat complicated journey. I could really use your support!

A little about me. I am a family genealogist. I am a master gardener. I am a wellness advocate that uses essential oils to manage outbursts, anxiety, and meltdowns.

We are readjusting our sails to use the winds of change to their best advantage.

We have planned a way to say "Thank You" as we go. We plan to stop in every state along the way to properly photograph and document graveyards using the Billion Graves app. We can't wait to keep you up-to-date.

Thank you for your consideration.

Pastor Jim of the McPherson Presbyterian Church was very kind and helpful. He gave us permission to clean tombstones in the graveyard attached to his church.

We arrived at a fortuitous time as they were in the process of getting quotes for tombstone cleaning. They didn't know you could DIY. We gave them the information about D/2 biological cleaning solution (used by Arlington National Cemetery) and the instructions from saveyourstones.com. They were thrilled. Now, says Pastor Jim, they have found their next Youth Activity! I hope they find as much satisfaction in the process as I have.

Thank you again for all your help and support. This journey has taught us so much. Please enjoy this small video.

We want to say a very special thanks to all those who helped us get to North Carolina. We've been here since September 28th, and have been so grateful to be able to assist Jennifer with her twins and newborn. We've made a short video to show you. We promised to clean tombstones for you, and we began with this one. This was a veteran's wife's tombstone. It was made of darker granite, so it wasn't a gruesome to gorgeous showstopper when completed. However, it is beautiful, and as our first - VERY educational.

  • Don't expect to see a white stone miracle when working on dark granite or marble.
  • Do not use too much cleaner. A little goes a long, long way.
  • It doesn't take as long as you might think it does! (This was an eye-opener, for sure.)
  • Some stones will look fabulous. Some have stains that won't come off.
  • It's wonderful to know that when it isn't "perfect" the D/2 will keep working for 6 months and continue to kill the lichen.

So we say again, THANK YOU! You truly blessed our lives.

Aurora Faye update:

Shortly after she was born, Aurora needed help. She was whisked away to the NICU where the oxygen, etc. she needed in order to survive was attached to her. She had the very best care. One of our dear nurses took a photo with me, and we are so grateful to her and the entire staff here at Womack Army Medical Center.

Even though it felt like we were away from her for a very very long time, she literally came home in just one week. We celebrate the wonder of a new baby.

About day 4 Jennifer was finally able to finally hold her beautiful little girl.

When anything doesn't go as planned, there is always an added layer of emotional distress. With James, Ben and Saya at home, there was another layer of care pulling me in that direction too. When I got home from the hospital and Jennifer one of those days, it was time to simply go play, and we took Saya to one of the nearby parks. It was very therapeutic to simply walk, skip and dance in the fresh air.

And while Jen and I were engaged in helping to save Aurora's life, you should know that Hurricane Ian made its presence known along the coast here in NC as well. The winds beat at the trees outside the Center, yet it was wonderful to know we were snug and safe on the hospital grounds.

Thanks again!

Hi!

Here's another journey update for you all! Thank you so much for your support of this mighty endeavor!

We were continuing on our way, knowing that our time was running short. We HAD to arrive at the Fort Bragg Main Gate in order to receive our guest passes prior to closing time at 9 pm, on the 28th of September. We made it with only 1.5 hours to spare! It felt so touch-n-go there for a while as we just kept driving, and driving, and driving. James was able to drive for most of the trip, which was an enormous blessing to me.

Jennifer was scheduled to have the baby on the 29th. That's why our arrival time was so very critical. Whew!

Jen is suffering from some pretty intense edema (water retention). I used some massage techniques and essential oils on her feet. So yummy, she says!

The 29th dawned cloudy as Hurricane Ian began to make its way up the coast, but we were in a safe place and only felt the winds and some heavy rain.

Here we are, getting ready for the events of the day!

And then, it was showtime. Baby Aurora Faye Chavez arrived at 9:23 am, sweet and sassy at 19" and about 6 lbs 8 oz. Aurora didn't respond to life (breathing) as hoped. Jennifer was so sad she could not hold her baby immediately after birth. Baby Aurora was taken pretty quickly to the NICU, and placed on machines to help her lungs function properly. Jennifer seems to be recovering well, but the edema is hanging on much longer than expected.

And a tiny, precious hand waves hello as she greets the world.

More coming later, and THANK YOU for helping us get here. We wouldn't have made it without you!

~Diana
