A Letter From Path’s Auntie Anna:

There’s the story of the lightning strike. And then, there’s what happens after.

Path is the rarest of birds: a teenager who had a stroke. This smart, funny, artsy, adventurous, kind-hearted kid is alive today because of quick-acting public school staff, EMTs and health care workers. A miracle! Then came the slow healing: the coma, ventilator, five surgeries, three months without an enclosed skull (yes, you read that right)…

Through the storm, many pitched in. THANK YOU. Your support went toward a wheelchair-accessible van, neck braces, medical supplies, massage therapy, and more. This bright-eyed 17-year-old is hitting one milestone after another because of you.

It’s been 15 months since lightning struck. Here’s the good news: Path is in school, full-time at a place that combines education with physical and occupational therapies. Thanks to a key medical intervention, her flexibility is improving bigtime: she can (with assistance) do bicep curls! On both sides! And she’s more adept at communicating with her AAC device. That’s huge. We miss her.

This gives us a peek at what’s possible in Path’s long-term recovery. But it’s tough. With limited ability to speak, move, or eat, she needs 24/7 care. Her parents carry that, on top of their jobs and parenting Path’s brother (and four wily pets). Gaps in health insurance coverage mean they’re paying out-of-pocket for pricey daily essentials. And we dream of what progress Path could make in three weeks of full-time rehab this summer — if costs could be covered.

It’s $2,000/day at Mary Free Bed. This is time-sensitive, doctor-recommended rehabilitation, but neither private insurance nor Medicaid will cover it. So: we aim to raise an additional $42,000. (This raises our fundraising goal to $78K)

You can help! No donation is too small. Every bit helps Path.

I’ve seen, too, how it helps her family to feel your support, coming from a community that stretches even further than they could have imagined.

Let’s keep going. Please give. Please share.

Together, we’re fighting for Path’s future.

Hello friends,

On Monday, December 2nd, 2024 my oldest son's best friend Path (age 16) called her mom to come pick her up from school because she had a migraine. It quickly became apparent that it was much more than a migraine when Path lost consciousness. She was rushed by ambulance to the ER and had to be intubated. Tests concluded that she had an Arteriovenous malformation in her brain.

From the Mayo Clinic, "An arteriovenous malformation, also known as an AVM, is a tangle of blood vessels that creates irregular connections between arteries and veins. This disrupts blood flow and prevents tissues from receiving oxygen. An AVM can occur anywhere in the body, including in the brain."

Path was transferred to Bronson Monday night, and Tuesday afternoon she underwent brain surgery to remove the AVM. At this point, they don't know how much brain damage was caused by the initial hemorrhage, however, the good news is they were able to completely remove the AVM with no complications.

Path is currently still unconscious, but making great progress! This is just the beginning. She has a very long recovery journey ahead!
And yes, this means the Appleton family will be celebrating Christmas and the New Year at Bronson Children's Hospital.

HERE'S WHERE WE CAN HELP!

As we all know, medical emergencies like this are extremely expensive because medical insurance will only cover so much. Not to mention the cost of gas and all the other unexpected expenses along the way.

I'm creating this *spotfund account to raise money to help the Appleton family with medical bills and other expenses throughout this scary journey. Any amount of money will help!

Thank you,

Lydia Woosley (Max's mom)

Hello, folks! Just a couple quick and exciting updates:

It’s been 4 weeks since we set the new goal to fund 3 weeks of rehab at Mary Free Bed for Path. Today we just passed the halfway mark with a total of $21,284 in donations since Feb 24th! This is amazing! THANK YOU!!! Let’s keep it up! Every donation helps Path get closer to recovery!

Also, a few weeks ago The Detroit News came to St. Joseph to do a story on Path and her family! Keep an eye out for that article to come out very soon! (I hear it’s really good!)

Hello, you wonderful humans!

It was brought to my attention that many people don't understand what happened to Path. Which is totally fair because it's really overwhelming, and when I first started this fundraiser page, none of us actually understood what happened. I'll be honest, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it! So, here's my attempt at a quick recap.

On Dec 2, 2024, Path (age 16) had a stroke while at school.

We didn't know it was a stroke at the time. All we knew was that she had a migraine, then she fell unconscious and stopped breathing. She was rushed to the ER, then to Bronson. The following day, surgeons performed brain surgery to remove the AVM. (Arteriovenous Malformation, also known as an AVM, is a tangle of blood vessels that creates irregular connections between arteries and veins) Until this dreadful December day, no one knew about the AVM, which hemorrhaged and caused Path to have a stroke. The surgery went well but Path suffered severe brain trauma due to the stroke, and lost ALL ability to function.

While she has made a lot of progress over the last 15 months, she is still bound to a bed or wheelchair and unable to care for herself  - she can't even speak. (She can, however, read.) It is equally hopeful and heart breaking knowing that she is very much IN THERE! Path is fully capable of understanding what is going on. She's now 17 years old, doesn't have a voice, and she is trapped inside a body that doesn't work. And she has chronic pain.

Most recently, surgeons inserted a Baclofen pump that distributes medication directly into Path’s spine. This medication will continue to reduce the high level of muscle tension and pain that she has and allow her to begin to learn how to move her arms and hands. This has helped relieve her muscle spasms and reduce pain, which has given her a lot more flexibility and ability to move!

In the background of taking care of Path, there are constant issues with insurance. Primary insurance has repeatedly gone against the wishes of her medical team by denying her return to the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, Path is also in limbo with Medicaid, and a decision to approve her application is pending. The goal of trying to raise an additional $42K is to provide Path with three additional weeks at Mary Free Bed - to continue to work on healing enough to start (hopefully) eating food. To learn how to speak again. To begin to confidently move her arms and hands. To build on the progress she has fought so hard for this past year.

I hope this helps to clear up any confusion.

Hello! Thank you so much for your donations! They have truly helped the Appleton family during this nightmare! Every penny is appreciated! Please check out the main story again, as we have updated it to reflect a new push for more funds. Our hope is for Path to go back to Mary Free Bed for three weeks of full-time rehab this summer. This is time-sensitive, doctor-recommended rehabilitation, but neither private insurance nor Medicaid will cover it.

Please donate and share! No donation is too small. Every bit helps Path get closer to recovery!
