July 2024 update!

I have found the car for me. I even had a two-day test drive. My mechanic says it is in excellent condition. I went shopping, to church and even filled up the gas tank...all by myself!

my story -
So close. So far.
So close to truly living independently and being able to get out of my house to run an errand, to visit my Godson, to just...get out on my own.
So far. The cost of a car for one who is disabled like me is amazing. And no, not covered by insurance. I need to raise $22,000 to cover the costs to modify the van to have a ramp and be accessible.
How did I get here?
I had polio as a child, spending more than a year in an iron lung. It left my left leg weakened and more than 2" shorter than my right. My right knee and leg then had to compensate. Fifty years of working the right leg as the only strong one left led it to literally break apart. I had it amputated above the knee in September 2020.
Now, nearing four years later, I am still not able to get out of my house on my own. My caring husband has to help. My amazing sister-in-law takes me to and from appointments. I even get help from the volunteer service my local town has for the disabled. I am grateful for all who help me.
But, if something happens while I am home alone? A quick run to the store? Taking my dog Duchess to the vet or get her nails clipped? A visit to see my mother? Run errands for my husband? See my godson? Go to church?
I cannot do any of these things that I used to.
Imagine if you had those limits on your life?
To become independent, I need a car I can either get into with my wheelchair or that can lift my chair into the car. We have been looking for about a year now. Either owning or leasing. Either way, they are way more expensive than you would think.
They run easily more than $40,000 to buy used.
My family and friends who know I have been looking have asked how they can help. So, I made this page.
Will you help me?

Thank you and God bless.
