This sweet little neighborhood cat who is always full of nuzzles and affection was was recently dumped on the street by a neighbor when they moved. Nearly a kitten herself, the saddest part is that she is very pregnant. This weekend she came to my porch begging to be let in and would not leave. All of the local shelters are full and already overcrowded with kittens. So I looked down at her rubbing her sweet little cheeks against my ankles and making happy little chirps, and said "okay mama, you're home." My heart just melted. Last night as I rested my hand on her purring belly it felt like she had a whole feline rugby team in there! So today I took her to the vet and she happily tested negative for feline leukemia, feline AIDS and heartworm. Both she and her pregnancy are healthy and I was right, she is ready to pop-- the vet gave it a week at most before she showers me with kittens.
This week happens to be my birthday and all I want is for this mama and her babies to have a warm and wonderful start in the world. Having recently left my full-time job to finish my PhD, money is tight right now. It would be such a help to know that there was a little extra $ in the bank to cover the extra food for so many extra mouths, her postpartum veterinary care and spaying, as well as vaccines and spay/neuter for the little ones so that they will be highly-adoptable to loving families. Just her vet visit today plus current supplies has already come to nearly $500.
It may seem like a small or frivolous thing to raise money for just one cat-family, all I can say is that we try to wrap our hands around the needs of our neighborhood and those closest to us in tough times. It would mean the world to me if you could spare a little bit to help this sweet mama and her kittens get a happy healthy start in this world after being abandoned by an irresponsible pet owner.
