In April, 2023, I resigned from teaching after having accrued an impossible amount of leave without pay due to my daughter’s chronic illnesses. We had struggled before, but not to the extent that multiple years of lost income had impacted. Simultaneously, housing costs soared in Williamsburg. A family member offered us a new start with housing as long as we needed it, but across country. We made the difficult decision to use my savings to pack up our lives and move our family there - an expensive move - only to find out that the situation was not a healthy one. We had been led to believe a lot of things that hadn’t been the whole picture. It wasn’t safely workable. Stranded, I sold my last valuable possession (my car) to fund our return, without most of our belongings, to our previous region where we at least had friends and history, but are left effectively homeless and without transportation, a difficult way to start over again.

I am still self-employed and am applying to full-time positions, but in order to keep my children’s lives on track - one starting kindergarten in August and one in college, I need a modest vehicle and a permanent address. I just can’t pull these together without help, and I have nothing left to sell.

I’m seeking funding for an inexpensive car and a first/last month deposit on a small home for our family and beloved pets. I’ve tried every other resource at my disposal but I know we need big help to make it.

Day 39 (I think - it’s possible it’s 40) of this giant misadventure.
We’re still 0 for 3 (job, car, home) but inching closer.

We are safely housed until Monday 8/14 and may have a place for a week after - no small step and I am beyond grateful.

We have a car available to us beginning this weekend but getting the $3000 has been one step forward 2 steps back as overdue bills that weren’t forwarded to me when we moved started eating into what we had managed to put together. I am going to pull out all the stops on the jewelry sales but am running low on inventory and will inquire again about emergency loan funding. A private loan would be amazing. This car is critical to our ability to keep going so we’re working hard to make it happen.

And interviews - new job leads this week and hiring events, so I’m off this morning to pull together an interview outfit (most of my clothing is trapped in a Vegas storage unit for the moment) and am hoping a contract is only a few days away.

i really appreciate everyone who has not only contributed, but shared our story. Sharing is as valuable as donating - reaching the right person with the right opportunity is what is going to help us fix this, so if you’re willing to share far and wide, I am your biggest fan ever.

Hoping to have good news to update with soon. Hugs.

We keep getting closer, and are so close to solutions in so many ways, but can’t get over any single finish line. We were able to stay with extremely kind friends for 10 days while they were primarily out of town, however that ends Monday and we don’t have an alternative yet. We’ve applied for crisis housing and haven’t heard back. I’ve reached out to community members with more experience there to see if I should be contacting someone else and am waiting for input. I have one job offer but onboarding timing is slower than hoped and a dozen job applications out (so far - I complete at least 2-3 each day and more when I have the access I need). I have a solid, modest car ready to buy if I can get the money together by the 14th. The perfect house in the perfect spot at a great rental price with a workable move-in date just opened up, but the job timing and deposit are still pending and a practical co-signer situation is uncertain as yet. We are SO close to safe but still so impossibly far.

A job. A home. Transportation. The three pieces to the puzzle that we desperately need to find and that we just keep missing by so little in the grand scheme of things.

The girls are holding up as well as they can. G is looking forward to kindergarten, friends and normalcy as soon as we know where that can/will be. I’ll be grateful to know S is safely back at college  soon, even though having her with me makes my soul peaceful and rejuvenated. It will mark her as safe.

We’ve been given the temporary gift of security with our friends, and I am deeply grateful for the love and support that we’ve been shown.

If you have a community of prayer, a larger audience for this story, real opportunities for crisis lending, real immediate job openings - please keep us in mind. We’re just a handful of miracles away from a brand new start and willing to work so hard for them.

With gratitude,

Shayna
