Growing up in the Bronx, as an African American woman, I have encountered a lack of access to healthy food, adequate housing, transportation, education, and health services. I became a healthcare provider with a goal to help sick individuals in poor communities. As I worked my journey as a healthcare worker, I noticed patients have no access to their primary care providers and end up in the emergency room for minor health issues.  They wait hours and hours just to be seen for 5 minutes and discharged. I want to improve and decrease the barriers of individuals seeing a provider when they need one by opening an urgent care.
Urgent care centers can also serve as primary care or medical home centers for patients living in rural or medically underserved areas. These health facilities are sustainable in underserved areas because they are typically less expensive to run than a hospital emergency department, but can meet common medical needs.
