My Dog Blue is 8 years old and is a Dachshund. He is very energetic, he loves to play fetch and is loved by everyone he meets. Especially, kids that will play fetch with him. I just had a baby last year, My daughter Addison, who just turned 1. She loves her dog Blue and loves watching him  plays fetch and when he snuggles with her. But, Unfortunately, if we don’t get the surgery he needs with in the next 24 hours he may not get to play fetch ever again.

A little about Blues family.

I am his mother Michelle and I am a stay at home wife and mom, after having Blues sibling, in February of 2022. My fiancé Kenny, got laid off from Amazon this last December and he is desperately trying to find another job. But, it’s hard to find a job in tech right now because, a lot of tech workers are getting laid off. It’s been a tough couple months in that regard and when it rains it pours, and now our Dachshund Blue is hurt and needs a life altering surgery or risk being paralyzed for the rest of his life.

How it happened

Blues injury to his spine happened suddenly and without notice 2/23. Blue was doing the thing he loved most, which is playing fetch and all of a sudden his hind legs went limp. He couldn’t move either of his hind legs and was in excruciating pain and discomfort. We immediately took him to the emergency vet. The vet informed us that Blue has a slipped disc or IVDD that is cutting off a nerve resulting in paralysis. The vet informed us of our options.

Option 1 is to send Blue home with pain medication to try to let Blue’s spine heal naturally and he said that would most likely result in blue being paralyzed the rest of his life. And this approach is inherently risky because he may not be able to urinate or defecate on his own. option 2 is emergency surgery. Which if done within 24 hrs after something like this happens has a 90 percent recovery rate. if our family wants blue to return to the fun loving pain free not paralyzed  dog it’s going to be extremely expensive. This Surgery is between 10-15 thousand. And the longer we wait to get surgery the less successful the surgery outcome will be.

That brings me to why I am asking for help and starting this Gofundme for my Dachshund Blue, My family cannot afford this surgery right now, But like most people our pets are our family. And Blue has half of his life left to live and we love him dearly, he is a good loving dog.

We always pictured him and our daughter growing up to be best friends. Please help make this dream a reality Anything you can donate for his surgery and recovery would be greatly appreciated from us.
Thank you,

Michelle, Addison, Kenny

Update for Blue:

We are two weeks post surgery with Blue. He had a checkup on Thursday. Overall he is recovering on the slower side of expectations. The doctors think within the next 6 weeks he will regain the ability to walk, but he might have a bit of a wobble the rest of his life. This is due to his left back leg being a bit weaker than his right in this recovery.

Our routine for Blue is giving him his medication in the morning and then again at night. He enjoys medication time because he likes the peanut butter we use to get him to swallow the pills. After the medication sets in, we take him outside to potty, followed up with rounds of physical therapy. The doctors showed us some new techniques to help him regain his walking ability, which was good to learn. We try to do physical exercises with Blue at least four times a day. We are also excited to see him able to stand briefly on his own when we release his leg harness.

We are so appreciative of all the love and support given by everyone here. We share your good wishes with Blue every day., and he is always happy to wag his tag in response. With all of the craziness in the world, your compassion is a beacon of truth that there is still a bounty of good in the world as well. Thanks so much again!

Hello everyone! Blue’s been resting quite a lot since surgery, which is good because he needs to rest to heal. Sometimes he still wants to play fetch and run after toy's, which is strictly off limits for now. He’s in good spirits for the most part besides, when we do physical therapy. Which we have to do 4x a day. He likes to fight back a little when we stretch his lower legs out all the way. He gets a little feisty and barks now at packages or strangers that walk by.

I just want to show, how blue goes outside for now. With this harness to hold up his lower extremities.

Update:

Blue is doing a bit better today. We have relayed all of the love sent forward by all of you and we can’t be more grateful for all of the help and good wishes we have received.

We would like to especially give gratitude to Viva Frei, who was gracious enough to donate and to share it out to his Twitter and Locals followers. We are still in awe and joy for his help (Viva and Robert Barnes are heroes of ours).

As for the health update on Blue: his appetite is back and he is able to urinate on his own, but has trouble communicating it before his crate pads get wet. We give him regular sponge baths to make sure his skin doesn’t get damaged from the urine, then we do physical therapy on his lower extremities. We plan to take him outside to potty once he gets a better gate, and are hopeful to see signs of it returning in the next week or two.

Again, we cannot convey how much love we feel from all of you! This has been a very tough situation for us and it is amazing to know that there are so many caring and generous people out there. You all have touched our hearts. Thank you all so, so much!
