We got a call on a Friday about taking a 12 week old deaf baby boy. His mom was on drugs and homeless, and did not want him to go into foster care. On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, this precious little guy was placed in our home. Within a month his mom found out she was expecting again. 
Three weeks before her new baby girl was born, she asked us to adopt Luca, who had lived with us for almost nine months by that point. 
He has had multiple doctors appointments, hearing aids, braces, surgeries, tests, 18 months of physical therapy, 6 months of occupational therapy, and more. Luca is small for his age, has delays, ptsd trauma from abandonment/neglect, and sensory issues. He has multiple doctor’s appointments and tests ahead to help diagnose if or what sort of treatment plan is needed. Since Luca was not in foster care and we were not his guardians, we received no state help, grants, or assistance for his care. The adoption was private, so we paid just over $10K out of pocket.
Though Luca was deaf for the first six months of his life and wore a hearing aid for the next six, he was cleared by UofM Ann Arbor, at 15 months of age, as having normal hearing. Because of his hearing delay, we have taught him sign language, which is his main form of communication. He says three words currently, “Mama”, “Dada”, and “Yeah”. 😊 However, he knows about 50+ signs, and learns more on his own by watching Signing Time. Luca is currently two years and two months old.
We would love to have an Adoption Party, but we just don’t have the resources because every extra penny we have has gone into Luca and his sister Eisla. With that being said, we would love it if you could help us get a few things they need. We would like to get a sign language program for Luca to continue to learn and communicate, as well as for us (and anyone else who wants to learn it as well). We are also in need of a couple of car seats that can grow with them, and a few other baby and safety items.
