My name is Melanie and I am the victim of a “romance scam.”  A man I met on an online dating site spent half a year preying on my pain and vulnerability. He swindled me out of all my savings and left me barely able to pay my essential rent, utilities, and groceries.

I never imagined that searching for love would leave me financially devastated.

After a difficult separation from my partner of 20 years, I rejoined the dating world hoping to meet a mature, kind, genuine, man ready for a real relationship. I knew that dating again might involve heartache, but I never imagined how dangerous it would become or that my newfound love would take all my money, ghost me, and leave me financially struggling.

I met “David” on a popular dating website. He wasn't the first connection I made but he was the most sincere and kind. He seemed caring, attentive, funny, and compassionate. We would talk for hours each night about our families and our lives, and he agreed he wanted a long-term relationship. We talked about our favorite music, travel bucket lists, and shared a similar sense of humor. He told me I was beautiful, that he prayed for someone like me, and that he wanted to fill the void in my heart. He sent cute photos and he looked so kind. His voice matched his soft eyes. We texted constantly. He told me he loved me.

Looking back now with 20/20 hindsight, there were flags but he was charismatic and expertly talked his way out every time I expressed concern. When I wanted to meet in person, he would joyfully agree and then cancel at the last minute. When I asked to meet on Facetime, he would happily plan with me and then at the last minute say he had to work or had some urgent matter. There was always a reason, always an excuse, followed by love-bombing, which is a series of intense loving and romantic conversations, compliments, and promises. He would spend hours reassuring me when I felt doubtful, telling me that we were slowly building emotional trust and connection and I needed to be patient for the love of a lifetime. He said I should be proud that we fell in love with our words and minds, not our bodies or superficial looks. It became difficult to see clearly.

Eventually, he told me he had to travel overseas for work so he could pay off debts and make himself stable for me. We again professed our love for each other. We made plans for me to pick him up at the airport when he returned.

Then our conversations started to involve money. At first, he needed help replacing his iPhone, and instead of me buying him a phone he said he needed a cash transfer through Apple Cash so he could get a better deal abroad. He seemed embarrassed and apologized profusely and promised he would repay me, and then he love bombed me. We had spent half a year getting to know each other, I trusted him.

Then he asked me to send him money via gift cards, telling me that he had an urgent situation where he needed to repay a loan. I have had a stable job for decades but I emptied my savings account to help him on the promise that he adored me, that he had his funds tied up in cryptocurrency, and that he would repay me and more. He even sent me a screenshot of his investment account balance which had his name on it.

On the so-called date of his return, he called me "from the airport" saying he had been arrested and needed me to send him emergency bail money. He even sent me photos of the arrest. He said it was urgent. He sounded so distraught and I was frantic to help. I didn't have time to think but I didn't have any money left so I quickly took out a loan against my car and sent it to him. He said it needed to be sent via cash cards so he could transfer it quickly and get released. He promised repeatedly that he would pay me back and reassured me that he needed to wait a little longer to access his crypto account. When I started asking questions, he would make me feel guilty for not trusting him despite declaring my love for him.

I wanted to believe him.

Over the course of several months, I sent over $15,000 dollars trying to help someone I thought loved me. Friends and family were concerned, but I held onto hope because I genuinely cared about him and believed in the future he kept promising me. During this time,

he still kept coming up with excuses to not meet me face to face.

Then the truth finally became impossible to ignore. A friend sent me some articles and I started to read about love scams. I even watched the documentary, Hey Beautiful: on The Anatomy of a Romance Scam.

I had been the victim of a romance scam.

The emotional damage was heartbreaking enough, but the financial aftermath has been devastating and life-altering. I am now struggling with debt, loans, and financial obligations that I took on while being manipulated by someone who preyed on my loneliness and my nature to always believe the good in people.

Sharing this publicly is incredibly difficult. I have felt shame, embarrassment, grief, and anger toward myself. But I also know I am not alone. Romance scams are destroying lives every day, and many victims suffer silently because they are too ashamed to speak up.

I am choosing to speak up.

I am asking for help as I work to recover financially and emotionally from this experience. All donations will all go toward paying down the debt and loans accumulated during the scam. I foolishly took a loan against my car for “David” and if I cannot pay that loan back, my car will be repossessed and I will lose the ability to commute to work to a stable job that I worked hard to get.

The loans and money I lost have made it impossible for me to keep up with my rent,  utilities, and loan bills. I struggle with whether to but food or pay my bills. I now live less than paycheck to paycheck and my own credit and financial stability has been severely damaged.

If you are unable to donate, I completely understand. Sharing this fundraiser or simply offering encouragement means more than you know. It also helps raise awareness of this devastating scam so hopefully others can avoid being victimized.

Thank you for reading my story, for showing compassion instead of judgment, and for helping me rebuild after one of the most painful experiences of my life.
