Hi everyone,
Our names are Latesha and Bridget, and we are raising funds to help care for our grandmother and mother, Ann Carr, who is 82 years old and lives in the Gwynn Oak area.
On September 27, 2025, Ann suffered a stroke that changed our lives overnight. She was hospitalized at Northwest Hospital for approximately one week. Unfortunately, due to her age and other disqualifying factors, she was not approved for the surgery that breaks up the blood clot in the brain. The stroke affected the right side of her brain and resulted in paralysis on her left side. At this time, she is unable to walk or use her left arm and hand for self care.
After her hospital stay, she was placed in a rehabilitation and nursing facility where she received physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy with the hope that one day she may walk again. She has now reached the 100 days of care allotted by her insurance and must transition back home.
In addition to her physical limitations, the stroke has caused major signs of vascular dementia. She often believes she can still walk and attempts to get out of bed on her own. On October 31, 2025, she was rushed to the hospital after falling out of bed at the rehabilitation center. Thankfully, she only suffered minor bruising, but the incident highlighted how critical safety measures are for her care.
To prepare for her return home, our family has already made important modifications, including widening doorways and building a wheelchair ramp to ensure safe access. We have also purchased a custom made wheelchair that helps with stability and neck support. While these steps were necessary, there are still additional needs to create a safe and sustainable home care environment.
One of our most urgent needs is a hospital bed that can lower closer to the ground to reduce the risk of falls. The bed we currently have does not lower to a safe level and only includes top rails, making it difficult to keep her secure. We also need to purchase an automatic Hoyer lift. The lift we are currently renting is manual and very challenging to use for someone who weighs approximately 180 pounds and has limited mobility. An automatic lift would allow us to transfer her safely and reduce the risk of injury to her and to our family caregivers.
All funds raised will be used to support Ann’s transition to home care by purchasing necessary medical equipment and ensuring her safety, dignity, and comfort as she continues her recovery.
Beyond her medical needs, Ann is an incredible woman. She is a devoted member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Woodlawn, Maryland, where she served on the usher board, participated in Great Commission work, and has always been a faithful tither and dedicated member. Before COVID, she attended church every Sunday in person and continues to join online faithfully.
She is a loving, strong woman of God who loves plants, animals, spending time with family, and making people laugh. She is a natural jokester and has a special gift for adopting people into her family. She retired from Oak Crest as a food service manager and later worked for Baltimore County Public Schools as a bus attendant, serving children with disabilities and special needs.
Now, as her daughter and granddaughter, it is our turn to care for her with the same love, dedication, and compassion she has shown to so many others.
