Hi there!!  My name is Kristina Mahan and I am a co-worker and friend of Jessie Mason.  We both work opposite shifts as RN's in the Baptist NICU in Little Rock, AR.  Jessie's husband Brendan is also a healthcare hero.  They have four beautiful children, two sets of twins to be exact.  Sawyer and Sadie are their oldest and then Declan ("Deckie") and Kegan are their youngest.  Our spotlight for prayers, good vibes, and any financial support that can be given is on Declan.

Let me stop here and paste in what Jessie posted recently about why sweet Deckie is in need:

We are still waiting to meet with the surgeons. The mass is larger than they thought but it is isolated to his right kidney. They are thinking Wilms’ tumor. The CT showed he was clear of other masses in his chest, abdomen, and pelvis. We don’t know when surgery will be but our nurse said he is NPO after midnight. They will start chemo 10 days after his surgery. They are going to place his port during his surgery so he won’t have to be put to sleep twice. We are still in such shock.

The current plan for this tiny fighter is:

They consulted 6 other hospitals about their opinion on his treatment. Unanimously, they agreed to chemo first and surgery second. Declan has a high probability of another Wilms’ tumor so we need to try to save as much of his kidney as possible. If we removed the tumor today, they would have to take half of his kidney. So, we are heading down to surgery for port placement. Should take about two hours total. We will start chemo tonight or in the AM. Will discuss what all that entails after surgery. Plan is to do 6 weeks of chemo, repeat scans, and either remove tumor or 6 more weeks of chemo, surgery and then 6 more weeks of chemo after that. Just pray….

Thank you all so much for your continued prayers!!  As you all know, it was quite rough post up for Deckie. wilma is evicted, Deckie is home and was able to celebrate the 4th, and a plan is set for further chemo and radiation.  Soooo keep those prayers and support coming for super hero Deckie, his medical team, and his family!!  Here is an update from Mom today:

We have our warrior markings!! He did great today, minus the unfun part of accessing his port. We will meet with the radiation oncologist before starting radiation on July 18 to see the full plan. In the meantime, the physicist and radiation oncology team will develop a plan to radiate the hell out of the remains of Wilma!! Thank you for your love and prayers!! Deckie’s Warriors are like none other!!

Good morning Devoted Defenders!!  So much to be thankful for, especially you all.  The last ciuple of weeks for Declan were quite rough with a non existent ANC, bone marrow that had checked out for a moment, fever, lethargy, and infection that placed threat of surgery on his toe before his wilma eviction surgery.  BUT with his team of devoted defenders praying and sending good vibes, that surgery was only a threat, ANC rose, and bone marrow kicked in.  Thus Deckie was feeling better and discharged home 3 days ago.  You all have been absolutely amazing and that is and under statement really, standing with Deckie and supporting him prayerfully and financially.  I know the Mason family is beyond grateful and thankful. wilma (whom I refuse to capitalize) eviction date is Monday, June 20th so y'all keep doing your thing Declan's Devoted Defenders.  Much love to you all and stay cool...literally!!

From grandmother:  Today is World Kidney Cancer Day! I love this picture of my son, Alex, and grandson, Declan. They are uncle and nephew both diagnosed with a different type of kidney cancer within the last year. Alex was diagnosed last June with renal cell carcinoma; he had surgery in August and is doing great! We found out in March that Declan has a Wilms tumor caused by his Beckwith Wiedemann Syndrome. He will have surgery Monday to remove it. Please say a prayer for our sweet boy! One day I pray that all cancers can be cured or better yet prevented!!

Thank you all as donations continue to come in for Deckie and his family!!  There has also been an Amazon wish list account set up since last update as well.  The link is https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/136TXTBD0FV7M?ref_=wl_share&fbclid=IwAR2TkvG8HvpajXjXgNsAphkFl-0wrBhCzx-C7bQbJUICfW9DR9PIj--_IwU

These last few weeks have been rough for Deckie, a new hurdle has emerged since last update but his medical team is on top of that as well.  Praises as the tumor has shrunk enough a surgery date is planned!!  So continued prayers are most appreciated for Wlma's eviction day.  Thank you all for continuing to follow Deckie and staying devoted and defensive in whatever way that may be.

Another goal met and how grateful we are for this, especially on this day where Superhero Deckie's health has a new complexity and now a new added plan.  Prayers for his healing and his family as they try to wrap their already burdened minds/hearts around these last couple of days.  We continue to stay devoted and defensive in whatever we can do Deckie.  We love you Mason family.  Thank you donors, thank you thank you thank you!

From Brendan and Jessie:

Where to even begin…we will start with the positive. Declan doesn’t have any metastasis to the brain!!! Praise Jesus!!!! The cancer is still isolated to his right kidney tumor. We will continue with chemo next week, with the big 3, and do an echo to make sure his heart is doing ok with the medications. During the MRI, they made an unexpected finding. Deckie has extensive left frontal cortical dysplasia. This happened in utero and is associated with Beckwidth Wiedemann. The main complication is seizures and the area that is damaged controls expressive speech. They are starting Deckie on a seizure medication and we have been given a rescue medication, too. We are to watch him super close for the next few days to make sure he tolerates it. They are willing to go up to 3 different seizure medications. If he is still seizing, they will do brain surgery to remove that portion of his brain. They want us to get through the next 3 weeks of chemo, have surgery, complete chemo and radiation and then they have lots more scans they want to do. In the meantime, we are to keep Deckie as comfortable and stress free, as possible. That included being discharged this evening. They are hoping that he will be more comfortable at home in his environment. Pray for Bren and I, as we navigate this new normal, on top of everything else and Deckie to remain seizure free and continue to beat Wilma!!! Thank y’all for your abundance of prayers and love for all of us. So grateful, we aren’t fighting this alone.

Thank you so much for the continued donations!!  We are nearing yet another goal and we are so grateful!  Superhero Deckie continues with chemo for several more weeks.  I pray this financial support will help in anyway possible in the weeks ahead and of course for a cure!!  Below is an update after #7 Wilma butt kicker chemo.  Keep praying and sharing 🧡

From Mom:

Round 7 has been just as cruel as we expected. We are just keeping the meds on schedule and Deckie hydrated. He’s lost 9 pounds since this started 7 weeks ago. Looking at his emaciated body is heartbreaking and a reminder of the battle he is fighting. BUT, just as he is getting smaller, so is Wilma!!! She will not defeat this strong boy! That’s a fact!!! Pray for the nausea and vomiting to improve, the headaches and body aches to be relieved by meds, cuddles, and rest, and our boy to recover. Love you all!
