Hello everyone, my name is Cindy.

This is by far the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write. I’ve been independent my entire life, and at 62 years old I have never asked for financial help from anyone. I’ve always believed in standing on my own two feet, and when someone else needed a hand, I was always the first one there. That’s simply who I’ve been my whole life. But today, I’m facing something I cannot overcome alone. Three years ago, my elderly neighbor was walking back from her mailbox with her walker. It was icy that morning, and when I saw her struggling, I went out to help. As I reached her, she slipped. Instinctively, I grabbed her to keep her from falling — and in doing so, my own face hit the concrete step. My teeth shattered on impact. The damage was severe. I now have bone loss, receding gums, and several additionalteeth are becoming loose. The infection flares often and spreads toward my neck, requiring repeated antibiotics and now other pressing medical problems. Eating and drinking is so painful much of the time, and smiling is something I miss deeply. My nickname has always been “Sunshine” because people said my smile lit up a room. Losing that part of myself has been heartbreaking. The surgery I need is over $25,000 and being self-employed, I don’t have insurance. The economy has made it impossible to save what I need, no matter how hard I work. Packing is my livelihood, and I love the families I’ve been blessed to meet over the years, many of whom have become lifelong friends. But right now, I am fighting a battle medically and financially that I simply cannot win alone. I know times are difficult for everyone, especially during the holidays. Asking for help is extremely uncomfortable for me, and I completely understand if you are unable to contribute. But if you are able to donate even $1, it would mean more to me than I can express. Every bit will go directly toward restoring my teeth, stopping the infection, and allowing me to smile again without pain. If you cannot donate, your prayers, love, and even sharing this page are just as appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Thank you for caring. I hope one day soon I can share a picture of my real smile again — the one people used to call Sunshine.

With love and blessings,

Cindy
