Dear Family and Friends,
For my tzedakah (charity) project, I am raising money to build a nursery school in Kongoni, a rural village in Malawi. I am fortunate enough to have visited Malawi twice; in 2018, when I was in first grade, and in August of 2022 when I was in sixth grade.
On the first visit, my Hannah Senesh Community Day School classmates and I wanted to help children in need. We collected books and donated them to a rural library. On my second trip to Malawi, during our visit to Kongoni village, I saw children using a dilapidated church as their nursery school. I was struck by how difficult it would be for children to learn in these conditions.
The community is committed to building a new school, they have already molded hundreds of bricks for a new building, but they do not have the resources for the additional materials needed. When I saw how much these children need a new building and how committed their community is, I decided that helping to build the nursery school would be my tzedakah project.
My Bat Mitzvah is on Hannukah, and the Hannukah story focuses on the Beit Hamigdash (temple) and its importance as a central place for the Jewish people. Even though a school is not a religious place, like the Beit Hamigdash, schools serve as central places for community. Building the school in Kongoni is a very meaningful project for me. I’m blessed to be able to learn in a wonderful building, filled with excited students and committed teachers, and I hope to see the same in Kongoni.
Please join me by supporting my tzedakah project.
Toda Raba and Zikomo (thank you)!
Raya
