Aghogho’s fight with sickle cell.
I remember meeting Aghogho Amarogbemi Inone in junior high school in Nigeria. We were not the closest friends then, but we smiled at each other whenever we met. After I switched schools, we lost communication but reconnected on social media a few years back when she told me about her predicament. I recall she was always slimmer than most of us, but I never made sense of it as a child who was ten or so. Aghogho is a sickle-cell warrior and has fought all her life. Now in her thirties, she is still fighting.
Reconnecting with her, I have done the little I can but still see her suffer almost every month just managing the condition. I thought, why not ask this community for help on her behalf?
What is my plan? I want a few people to help so she can see a specialist in Lagos, Nigeria, and, if possible, be placed on Hydroxyurea to give her a chance. She could also explore the possibility of a stem cell or bone marrow transplant if there is more donation.
Consent!!! Kuki has given me consent to raise awareness and help by writing this and posting pictures.
What do I get out of this? Nothing. I have this intense anxiety whenever I do not hear from her for a few weeks to months, wondering what has happened. As a registered nurse, I know what she is going through.
I am a private person but will break protocol if necessary. Whatever you can donate to help goes directly to Her. I am blessed to be in the position to help, and I hope one day, I can open a foundation to help others, too.
