I’d like to introduce my Westie, Joey who is 6 years old and in need of a Pacemaker. Joey’s heart condition was recently discovered during dental cleaning. The surgery itself will cost around $8,500.00. I have already spent over $1,100.00 on his cardiac Vet visit and numerous tests required prior to this surgery.
This is Joey’s diagnosis: Joey has a condition called Third degree (complete) heart block – non atropine responsive. Mild left ventricular dilation, secondary to the slow heart rate – Normal left ventricular contractility. Mild increase in the left ventricular outflow tract velocity (flow murmur), secondary to low heart rate. Because of that abnormal conduction of electrical impulses within the heart, Joey’s heart rate is not able to increase with exercise resulting in weakness or collapse. No cardiac medications are recommended. Definitive treatment for this condition is a permanent pacemaker. This procedure is typically well tolerated but there are some risks including, but not limited to dislodgement of the pacemaker, fracture of the lead wire, infection of the pacemaker site, heart failure, and clot formation on the lead.
I have scheduled his surgery for April 15th. Learning more about this surgery and the risks is terrifying but Joey is a super sweet Westie and I’d do anything for him to continue to live a longer and healthy life. As Joey’s mom I'd move mountains to ensure his “Westietude” health and happiness, your contributions to help offset the surgery and follow up expenses would be a beacon of hope and every bit counts, if you're unable to give financially your prayers for Joey's full recovery would be a source of hope and strength.
I am 70 years old, retired and on a fixed income, but if this saves Joey’s life it will be worth every penny. Joey also has an older rescued brother, who is diabetic and on daily insulin and is thankfully doing well.
