Many of you in Houston know me—Lashelle Scott—as a Democratic activist. Others of you know me from the corporate energy world and Washington D.C.’s defense world. I’ve had quite a journey, and through it all, I’ve advocated for people and issues on the “right side” of history.
Earlier this year I was diagnosed with aggressive stage III HER2-positive breast cancer, and my journey shifted radically. I had to become an advocate for myself. Don’t get me wrong—I’ve had a great cancer care team here in Houston, my loyal friends have been at my side, and of course Eythal, my wonderful Husky, has helped me through it all.
But lord, I had no idea how this vile disease would kick my butt and leave me so exhausted. Chemotherapy, one mastectomy, another to go, reconstructive surgery, extreme fatigue, and an uncertain outlook. And now it’s kicking my pocketbook.
Having insurance is a godsend, limited though it is, but without an income, insurance goes only so far. Medical expenses I never expected just keep coming—a skyrocketing premium, out-of-pocket services and medications, transportation, parking, an upcoming deductible. I find myself struggling to make ends meet and stay optimistic. Thank god for Ethyl!
I’ve decided it’s time to ask for help, though I much prefer providing it. I still have a long road ahead. I know everyone is stretched with the pandemic and now the campaign season, but any donation you can make, big or small, will help me get through the rest of my next chemo treatments and surgeries, and I know I’ll get back on my feet and be able to advocate for others again. Thank you so much for helping me reach my goal.
