Please help me break free from the 'starving artist' curse I've been living under. My passion for creative work is fueled by a desire to contribute originality that can spark new ideas & fresh perspectives within society. However, in order to fulfill my vision and complete ongoing projects as well as prospective works that are beginning to take off, finding safe-and-stable home/work space has become a pressing concern.
Having completed an MA in Public Art and Performance Studies at London Metropolitan University after earning a BA in Theatre and Performance Studies at UC Berkeley- the pandemic caused matters out of our control which led me down alternative career paths searching for stability ultimately detouring onto teaching elementary school children- Which though enjoyable gave little satisfaction once faced with reasons such as system imposed bureaucracy turning toxic over time causing distancing towards all things creative-in essence rekindling passions seemed difficult.
Currently, I am experiencing a layoff that will terminate my teaching job along with where I'm residing; belonging to the school district. The layoff and losing my home exacerbate the situation of struggling to establish a sense of self-worth. I deserve an equal standing level playing field when carving out a place for my art and joy.
The "starving artist" narrative is one that has been perpetuated for decades, and it's not entirely accurate nor does it have to be true.
Many artists who are just starting out or do not have traditional career paths face financial instability, but this doesn't mean they will always remain that way. There are numerous ways to support up-and-coming creatives without relying on the same old story of struggling in poverty in order to achieve creative validation.
Creating more avenues through which artists can obtain funding grants/ sponsorships serves as a catalyst persuading them carry-on perusing crafts perseveringly; with fewer roadblocks standing before them new inspirations take place mirroring societal shifts where creativity shapes ideas & perspectives largely contributing to individualistic cultural climate enjoyed by all regardless socioeconomic backgrounds!
As an artist, I can attest to how crucial having a stable home and workspace is for success as well as creative output. Art requires not only dedication but also freedom from distractions that keep me away from reaching my goals. That's why most independent artists would kill for a dedicated space that they can call their own, without the need to worry about basic needs & financial security issues related to behind-the-scenes necessities like bills being paid on time and food.
When housing insecurity or work-space complexity arises- often resulting in stress beyond my control it quickly adds up draining my inspiration reservoirs ultimately impacting my artistic achievements negatively and hindering my growth potential- Equating to final works produced showcasing difficulties faced behind scenes at every turn which offers a look into those obstacles standing before artists ability flourish unrestrainedly.
Providing stable living conditions via assistance in covering expenses associated with monthly costs and such will allow expansion of each person’s talents organically percolating untapped abilities within them ensuring steady production of quality artwork over time resulting inevitable creation pieces reflecting luminaries outshining peers who succumb break-down challenges more easily-surviving hardships while maintaining careers long term consistently uplifting future generations allowing compelling representation authenticity shared across world!

Despite facing numerous hurdles and setbacks that have complicated my workflow, I have continued to persevere through it all.
