On June 24th, 2023, my sweet Pomeranian, Cashew, was admitted to the emergency veterinary hospital after displaying signs of extreme lethargy and stumbling. To everyone’s horror, his gums were pale. He was soon diagnosed with IMHA (Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia), a life-threatening autoimmune disorder, with no apparent cause. Despite the grim diagnosis, Cashew was shockingly alert and had no detectable organ damage. I took a chance on saving Cashew.
There is a long road ahead, but Cashew is responding well to treatment and the odds are in his favor. He is incredibly resilient and at a little over 6 years old, expected to live well with this condition.
If you know me, you know Cashew. He’s not just my pet of 5 years, but my Emotional Support Animal. The pet health coverage I have for him sadly does not cover this emergency.
