Hey yall,
My name is Brittany and like many others, I have been through it! I’d like to introduce myself a bit before I share all of the details that have led me to seeking community aid from kind hearted strangers.
I’m 27, I arguably have the cutest 13 year old terrier/chihuahua mix, and I’m hoping to return to school next year. Before a life changing event, I was enrolled in a Legal Studies program at a Midwest university. At the time, I was hoping to complete the program and immediately work towards enrolling in law school. This all changed on October 25, 2022.
On October 25, 2022, I was the victim of a random and violent crime. I was shot seven times by a man I did not know. This event led to me being hospitalized for 22 days and undergoing 12 surgeries. During my first night in the intensive care unit, medical staff were unable to find a pulse, a code blue was called. I only remember a brief moment after being resuscitated, I was surrounded by medical personnel. From that night onwards I improved with less serious complications. I was discharged from the hospital on November 16, 2022.
Each day since the shooting has been nothing short of a roller coaster. At the time of the incident I was married, however, the relationship became increasingly unsafe and I filed for and was granted a divorce this year.
I managed to find and pay for my own studio apartment for a few months, that brings us to now. As of September 2025, I had no choice but to move in with my parents. Financial support was extremely limited unless I moved home. I had no form of transportation, and I could no longer afford to pay my secondary bills. (Credit cards, loans, transportation expenses.)
I have been approved for financing plans for my credit cards, but there are still expenses that I cannot cover in addition to my credit card bills. Because I moved home, I had to break the lease at my apartment. Thankfully, they were kind enough to waive the early termination fee, but I still have to pay the $850 rent until they can rent out my unit.
I was encouraged to move home so that I could use my disability benefits to pay down my debts, but after my rent payment I only have about $250 left over. That $250 goes towards credit card payment plans.
I am asking for help so that I can get back on my feet. I understand that so many of us are in unfortunate situations, so just know that sharing my story is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I appreciate you.
🦋Brittany
