Our Shared Dream: Completing Our Blended Family
Our home is already blessed with a beautiful, busy kind of love. Both my wife and I have children from our previous relationships, and watching our kids grow up together as siblings has been one of the greatest joys of our lives. We have built a strong, unified family structure out of two different chapters. Yet, from the very beginning of our marriage, we have shared one profound, deep-seated dream: to bring a child into this world together. We want to create a baby that is a perfect biological blend of both of us—a little brother or sister who serves as the ultimate structural anchor uniting our entire family.
Unfortunately, our path to making this dream a reality has been met with painful roadblocks. Years ago, during my first marriage, I underwent a vasectomy. When my wife and I committed our lives to each other, I eagerly underwent a complex vasectomy reversal surgery, desperate to give her the child we both so deeply desired. Sadly, the reversal did not restore our natural fertility. While recent lab testing shows a glimmer of hope—proving that my body is still actively producing sperm and allowing a small amount to pass through—the count is simply too low to ever result in a natural pregnancy.
Receiving the news that the reversal was a clinical failure was heartbreaking, but it did not change our determination. We refuse to let a mechanical blockage dictate the future of our family. We have an official medical consultation on August 19th at Midwest Fertility Specialists in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Because my body is still successfully producing viable sperm, and because my wife is 34 with an excellent biological ovarian reserve, our medical team has given us a definitive, highly successful roadmap: In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). By manually pairing my sperm with her eggs in a lab, science completely eliminates our infertility hurdle. Our clinical prognosis for a live birth is incredibly strong.
The only barrier standing between our family and our baby is financial. We live in Indiana, a state that does not mandate insurance companies to provide fertility benefits. As a result, our commercial insurance treats our medical condition as an elective luxury, leaving us entirely exposed to tens of thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs for the IVF cycle, ICSI lab fees, and specialty medications. We are a hardworking, stable family, but saving that amount of liquid capital before age transitions my wife out of her optimal biological window is an impossible hurdle without taking on catastrophic medical debt.
Securing this grant would fundamentally alter the trajectory of our lives. To your selection committee, this is a financial award for a medical procedure. To us, your support is the bridge that allows us to finally complete our family. It represents the child we tuck in at night, the missing piece of our blended home, and the ultimate dream made possible.
