Hello Everyone~

My name is Sam and I am reaching out to you now to share some medical news about Eugene Gwozdz's health journey. I humbly ask each of you for just a little support (donation) to help Eugene.

I created this EMERGENCY fundraising effort
for our dear friend, Texas native Eugene Gwozdz (pronounced “Gwoats”), the musical multi-hyphenate with a fascinating family backstory and a remarkable ever-evolving career--from Broadway to regional theatres, both here and abroad.

Eugene desperately needs financial help as he just underwent a life-saving HEART TRANSPLANT on Thursday, November 09,  2023.

Eugene was admitted to New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center on 12 September 2023 (more than two months ago). New York-Presbyterian/Columbia is one of the leading academic medical centers in the world. Established over 40 years ago, its heart transplantation program is the largest and most experienced program in the United States. Eugene received his new heart 48 hours after his birthday, which was on Monday, November 6th.

What an absolutely EXTRAORDINARY birthday gift!

However, this past year, Eugene has been fighting for his life. His heart was not able to work on its own.

Since September of 2022, in order for Eugene to continue with his traveling career and life, he had to have Milrinone (a medication indicated for cardiac support) infused in him via a venous catheter, 24/7.

An ambulatory infusion Curlin Pump was used to continuously infuse the medicine into him. Eugene would use a small, compact backpack that would carry the Curlin pump and the Milrinone medicine bag. It was as if he was carrying a small backpack over his right shoulder. This temporary "fix" enabled Engene to crisscross the country to do his concerts and musicals every month.

According to Dr. Kevin Clerkin, Eugene's Chief Cardiologist and coach who specializes in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology, no one had ever traveled with the Curlin Pump like Eugene did. Every week, Eugene would go to a LabCorp facility for blood work in whatever city he was performing in. Then, the next day, Eugene would receive a call from his Head Nurse Practitioner to let him know how his numbers were doing, thus enabling him to continue limited touring.

However, it was clear that Eugene was in dire need of a donor Heart Transplant. His heart was in such bad shape that a quadruple bypass would not have helped him at all.

Beginning this past September, Eugene was isolated in the CCU, unable to work, leaving him in a truly difficult financial situation.

With respect to Eugene's Rights under HIPAA privacy (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), I cannot disclose all the details of Eugene's medical crisis, but, as you can see from the pictures below, Eugene was hooked up 24/7 to some truly amazing state-of-the-art medical technology as he anxiously awaited his heart transplant procedure.

Eugene Gwozdz has worked with the Who's Who in musical theatre. He is considered one of BROADWAY'S TOP PIANISTS.

Since 1982, Eugene Gwozdz has connected with hundreds of prominent Broadway stars over the years.

- Eugene has been Music Director/Arranger for the American Dance Machine 21 since it was reborn 25 April 2012.

- Eugene was the Music Director/Pianist for Stephen DeAngelis' AT THIS PERFORMANCE concert series, the ongoing salute to Broadway and Off-Broadway Standbys, Understudies, and Alternates.

- Eugene was the Musical Director / Arranger / Orchestrator for the Chita Rivera Dance Awards; and the Jerome Robbins’ Broadway 30th Anniversary Concert at the Guggenheim.

- Eugene was Music Director / Pianist / and Arranger for ANIKA NONI ROSE at the LINCOLN CENTER AMERICAN SONGBOOK SERIES, and for the DRAMA LEAGUE TRIBUTE to PATTI LUPONE.

- He also orchestrated and arranged music for the critically acclaimed revival of IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE, IT'S SUPERMAN.

- He also was Music Director/Pianist/ Arranger for the hit show, THRILL ME, at the York Theatre, earning 2 DRAMA DESK nominations for OUTSTANDING MUSICAL and OUTSTANDING MUSIC, and an OUTER CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD nomination for OUTSTANDING OFF-BROADWAY MUSICAL.

- Eugene was also the Music Director for the critically acclaimed 20th Anniversary Revival Production of Maltby & Shire's BABY at the Paper Mill Playhouse.

- On Broadway, Eugene has played keyboards for THE FULL MONTY and OKLAHOMA! He also helped in the creation of the Forbidden Broadway's SPAMILTON where he was the Associate Music Director/Pianist for the hilarious spoof on HAMILTON.

- Eugene was very proud to be the Music Director/Pianist for "The Princess & The Frog" star, Anika Noni Rose (he taught Anika the music to the Disney film), and was also the Music Director/Pianist for Broadway Tony Award Winners Donna McKechnie, Cady Huffman; and is the MD/Pianist for Rachel York's Cabaret Show. He was also the Music Director/Pianist for Nicole Henry and Nicole Vanessa Ortiz. And he is Music Director for the talented songwriter, Anthony Nunziata, and he arranges Anthony's original songs.

- Eugene's Broadway National Tours include SUNSET BOULEVARD (Petula Clark), THE FLOWER DRUM SONG, SWING!, COLOR PURPLE, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, THE WILL ROGERS' FOLLIES, and WEST SIDE STORY (Conducted and played keyboards).

Eugene also has the cool distinction of teaching Tony Award Winner, Betty Buckley "Memory" from the musical CATS, before she sang it for Andrew Lloyd Webber. He also is Betty's rehearsal pianist for her shows.

Most recently, Eugene has supplied the musical spine for the new musical, HERE YOU COME AGAIN (which had a six-theater rolling premiere over the last year throughout the US and will be soon seen in the UK and, hopefully, the West End in London in 2025).

HERE YOU COME AGAIN is a two-actor musical by Bruce Vilanch, Gabriel Barre, and Tricia Paoluccio (with Songs by Dolly Parton and Others). Directed and choreographed by Gabriel Barre.

Eugene Gwozdz is also the accomplished musical arranger/orchestrator for the ground-breaking Yes! The Fantasy musical (created by Grammy-nominated Composer/Lyricist Earl Wilson, Jr.)

Yes! The Fantasy explores the dream that
BARACK OBAMA was visited by the spirits of several major Black historical figures immediately before he gave his famous keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

BELOW is a video of the moving song "I Have a Dream", composed by Earl Wilson, Jr., orchestrated by Eugene Gwozdz, and performed at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., by International Choirs from around the world, with Eugene's older brother, Lee Gwozdz (a world-renowned Catholic Church music director and the Director of Milwaukee's Sacred Music for the Basilica of St. Josaphat) conducting.

While Eugene has a resume that is chock full of heavyweights, it is really his remarkable upbringing with his two brothers and two sisters in Fort Worth, Texas (where he was born into a prominent and musical family) that captures the fascinating history of his life.

His father, Dr. Feliks Gwozdz, was a music prodigy and the director of music at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fort Worth, Texas. Four of his children--Eugene, Rick, Lee, and daughter Donna--are also music prodigies.

(Below, Eugene's father, at the piano.)

Born in Poland, Dr. Gwozdz relied upon his extraordinary *musical skillset* during captivity in Nazi concentration camps in World War II.

Eugene's parents, Dr. Feliks and Eugenia Gwozdz, met in a Polish ghetto and survived years in multiple Nazi concentration camps during World War II. While both parents were Jewish by birth, they converted to Catholicism before immigrating to the United States. Their two daughters, Lillian and Donna, and their three sons--Richard, Eugene, and Lee--were all raised as devout Roman Catholics. None of the Gwozdz children were aware of their Jewish roots--not until their father, Dr. Feliks Gwozdz, passed away.

Dr. Gwozdz is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas (along with Eugene's mother). The caduceus and musical staff at his father's gravesite denote his profession and his passion.

Eugene said the notes on the staff are the first four notes of the motet “Oh, How Blessed,” which Dr. Gwozdz often performed with the St. Andrew's Catholic Church choir.

http://hometownbyhandlebar.com/?p=10873

As a side note, Eugene's father, Dr. Gwozdz, was, for many years, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner, performing autopsies in both low-profile deaths and high-profile ones (including those in the Cullen Davis murder case).

A street in Fort Worth, Texas--Feliks Gwozdz Place--was also named in honor of Dr. Feliks Gwozdz, the first Tarrant County Medical Examiner (where the new medical examiner’s office was built).
**********************************

Yes, we all are Blessed. But what I find most remarkable is that Eugene Gwozdz has never once complained. NEVER once. He calls me and provides medical / family updates, but NEVER once did I ever hear Eugene complain that his heart was ailing. He always took the high road.

Earl Wilson, Jr. and I have a dream for Eugene: that his Broadway buddies and Fort Worth friends help in raising emergency funding. Yes, Eugene needs truckloads of Prayers, but equally important, he needs substantial financial support now, and also financial support during the time he is in rehab. It'll take many weeks until he is back up and running, and touring full-time.

THAT is our goal for this medical fundraiser: raising money for a unique musical talent who ALWAYS gave--and gave freely--to a community of creative actors, singers, composers, directors, and Broadway stars. Eugene has ALWAYS been there for EVERYONE at EVERY twist and turn. I now ask you and yours to give freely from the heart--just as Eugene poured his Heart and Soul into the musical work that he so loves.

*** Most importantly, I again repeat that Eugene will keep 100% of YOUR donations made on this Spotfund platform.

A million THANKS of Gratitude, Appreciation, Prayers, and Blessings.

A Healthy, Happy Holiday to everyone.

xo
