My name is Walter Childs. I am a legally blind, below the knee amputee who is in a powerto a Power wheelchair. For a little background on myself, I will tell you what has been going on with me over the past three years.
- Before 2019 I lost my sight in 2011
- In 2019, I had to have my foot amputated because of an infection that got in my foot. I was in rehab for nine months after that.
- In 2020. I was in the hospital for Mersa which I was in there for two months recovering from that.
- In 2021, I was in the hospital for a total of three months fighting Merca twice and had to have back surgery on my spine which was major and I had to have a toe amputated. So as a result of the back surgery now I am having a big problem walking so the doctor told me I should be in a power wheelchair.
Since late October of 2021 I have been in a power wheelchair but I feel confined and I have not been able to go anywhere because I don’t have a way to do that. Here, in Kernersville, North Carolina, there is no public transportation therefore I have no way of getting around unless I couldn't get my wheelchair in a car. We have a SUV that we bought last year when I could walk but now my wife and I have decided to sell it because my wife and I want to get a wheelchair accessible handicap van for us both to get around in it.
I am starting this page to raise funds for my wife and I to get a wheelchair accessible van. The reason why we want to get this van is so that we can get around to our medical appointments and for us to be able to spend time together.
I have priced wheelchair accessible Vans and they are not cheap. Unlike regular cars, wheelchair accessible vans can cost as much as $25,000-$30,000 more than the price of the car. For instance, a Chrysler Pacifica can cost around $40,000. A conversion for this vehicle can range anywhere from $25,000 to $40,000 which would make the total van price between $65,000 and $80,000. What I am trying to raise it is not that much. All I am wanting to raise is $65,000 to get a decent van that will last us a decade or so.
