SHEEP IN THE CITY
We are raising funds to once again host sheep in our unique and historic grounds within the wall of Saint Patrick’s Basilica on Mott Street! Our three sheep are residents of Buckwheat Bridge Farm, Wind & Solar-Powered Fiber Farm in Hudson Valley, NY which is a Certified Green Business.
Three Cormo sheep, an Australian breed of sheep developed in Tasmania by crossing Corriedale rams with superfine Saxon Merino, will be spending August and September with us and we are so excited to have them as our honored guests!
HOW MUCH?
Sheep don’t come cheap, so to host these amazing Cormos, we are incurring the following expenses for the transportation and maintenance of our ovine guests.
Veterinary Costs: $552
Shepherd Check-In once a week: $1860
Supplemental Feed and Hay: $175
Transportation to and from: $910
Signage: $172
Fencing: $1675
Permits: No Charge!
Total $5344
Any additional funds raised in this campaign will be designated directly to landscaping costs to improve the cemetery, a historical gem in the center of NoLIta. For specific budget and any questions please contact Frank Alfieri at frank@oldcathedral.org
WHY “SHEEP IN THE CITY”?
We have hosted sheep here at St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral once a year since 2014. The response of our community to having sheep grazing on our grassy grounds has been overwhelmingly positive. The sheep provide a sustainable method of “mowing” the grass by their grazing, thus eliminating the need for loud, gasoline powered mowers. The sheep provide a “natural fertilizer” rather than chemical-laden fertilizers and weed-killers that poison the earth. Sheep in the City promote beauty and well-being by amplifying the historic atmosphere of our gorgeous Church and grounds established in 1815, and provide a peaceful respite from the busyness and chaos of city living. Help us bring our sheep to the city by uniting as a neighborhood and community around this wonderful project!
