Honoring Benjamin “Benn” Zeak Dotson — A Story of Love, Forgiveness & Grace 🕊️

“I forgive them.”

Those are extraordinary words from a mother who has just lost her son.

But they are the words of Melissa, whose beloved son, Benjamin “Benn” Zeak Dotson, was taken in a sudden hit-and-run accident. The person involved has not yet been located, and the investigation continues.

There are still unanswered questions. There is deep grief. And there is a family trying to process a loss that came without warning.

And yet, there is forgiveness.

Melissa shared from her heart:

“I forgive them and pray they come forward and do the right thing, but no matter what, I hope they know Jesus as LORD. Nothing matters more than that.”

To understand the depth of that faith, you first have to know Benn.

Benn was born August 6, 1987, and to his mama, he will always be her “Benny Boo.” ❤️

He loved swimming, fishing, cooking, trips to Great Wolf Lodge, and especially good food—something that showed up in him from the very beginning.

Melissa remembers, “Ben loved good food since he was a baby. I would push him through the grocery store in the cart, and he would point at all his favorite foods and say ‘Yummm…’ before he could even talk.”

Food wasn’t just something he enjoyed—it was part of who he was. That love stayed with him all his life. Mission BBQ was a favorite, and he loved cooking Papa Zeak’s spaghetti with steak, pepperoni, and homemade sauce.

And that same love of food later became part of his service.

At A Place of Miracles Café and Clothing Cottage, where his mama has faithfully served the community for nearly 20 years, Benn was right there in the middle of it all. He didn’t just show up—he served. He would help load food into people’s cars, smiling, laughing, and doing it with genuine joy. He truly loved it—not as a task, but as a way to bless someone else.

That is the Benn his family wants remembered.

Not just how he died, but how he lived.

Benn’s life was also marked by faith.

He and his sister Rachael gave their lives to Jesus and were baptized at seven years old. At just eight, during an all-night church lock-in, Benn stood before a room full of adults and children and preached and prayed over them.

That same heart grew with him. His mama describes him simply as a giver—someone who helped anyone who asked and put others before himself.

That spirit of service reflects the heart of his mama as well.

Nearly 20 years ago, Melissa answered God’s call to serve her community, founding A Place of Miracles Café and Clothing Cottage. With Jesus at the center, she and her partners have spent years meeting people in need with food, clothing, prayer, encouragement, and love.

For nearly two decades, she has poured herself out for others. Now, her family needs that same love poured back into them.

Today, Benn’s family is facing both unimaginable grief and the unexpected financial burden that follows such a sudden loss.

We have established this fund with a goal of $11,000 to help with funeral and memorial expenses and to support the family in the days ahead.

If you are able to give, every gift matters. If you cannot, sharing this page and praying for this family is deeply appreciated.

Please pray for Melissa and all of Benn’s family as they grieve. Pray for comfort, for truth, and for justice.

And perhaps the hardest prayer—one Melissa is already praying—pray for the person involved. Pray for courage to come forward, for repentance, and for a life changed by Jesus.

Because Melissa’s forgiveness does not minimize the loss.

It means she refuses to let the loss have the final word.

Benn was more than a moment in time.

He was Benny Boo.

He was the little boy in the grocery cart pointing at food saying “Yummm…” before he could even speak clearly.

He was the child who prayed over a room full of people.

He was the young man who found joy in serving others—loading cars with food, smiling as he helped, loving every second of making someone else’s day a little lighter.

He was a son, a brother, a friend, and a giver who was deeply loved.

And though this family walks through deep sorrow, they are holding to the truth that God is still present and still working even in pain.

A life was taken too soon.

A family is grieving.

A mother has chosen forgiveness.

And a community now has the opportunity to love them in return.

So let us give where we can. Let us pray continually. And let us stand with Melissa and her family in the days ahead.

Grace for today.
Grace for tomorrow.
Grace for a grieving family.
And grace even for the one who needs forgiveness.

May Benn’s life be remembered not for how it ended, but for the love he gave and the life he lived.

And through it all, may grace have the final word. ❤️🕊️
