3.4 billion people - roughly half the world's population - live in high-risk areas for malaria. In 2012, the disease caused 627,000 deaths, 91% of which were in the African Region.
Because malaria episodes keep parents out of work and kids from school, the disease also has an economic impact: it costs Africa nearly $12 billion in lost productivity every year.
Bill Gates and British chancellor George Osborne have pledged $4 billion to defeat malaria, the world’s deadliest killer.
But we can't depend solely on the generosity of billionaires and heads of state to fight malaria. Let's do our part!
