Winnie is a mother, a survivor, and a lesbian seeking safety after being forced to flee her home country. She is currently living in a refugee camp in Africa, where daily life is a struggle for essentials like food, clean water, medicine, and safe shelter.
Returning home is not an option. After her family discovered that she is lesbian, Winnie faced serious threats because of the stigma and violence LGBTQ+ people can experience in her community. She fears for her own life and for the safety of her son, who has been separated from her and remains with his father in their home country.
Even while living with uncertainty and hardship, Winnie is doing everything she can to continue her process of seeking refuge in Canada—a place where she hopes to live openly, safely, and eventually rebuild her life with her son.
Funds raised will help Winnie meet urgent daily needs while she waits and prepares for the next steps in her journey, including:
