Help Us Make Our Home Accessible for Connor & Hudson 💙
Asking for help like this isn't easy for me, but there are some things I simply can't do alone.
Both of my sons, Connor and Hudson, have Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a progressive and ultimately terminal muscle-wasting disease. There is currently no cure.
Connor is 14 and Duchenne has already taken away his ability to walk. He relies on his wheelchair and on me for his everyday care, including transfers and many of the things most of us do without ever having to think about them.
Hudson is younger and still has much more independence. But having already walked this road with Connor, I know that I also have to think ahead and prepare our home for what Hudson may need in the future.
There are so many things about Duchenne that I can't control.
But I can work to make their world more accessible.
Our goal is to raise $28,000 to make several major accessibility improvements for our family.
The funds raised will help us work toward a permanent wheelchair ramp for our home, a motorized Hoyer lift & installation for safe transfers, a wheelchair carrier for my vehicle, and additional accessibility modifications that will make our home easier for Connor to navigate now while preparing it for Hudson's future needs.
And there's one project that's especially close to my heart.
I want to create an accessible LEGO space for Connor.
Connor loves building LEGOs. I want him to have a space designed around him—somewhere he can roll right up in his wheelchair, comfortably reach his pieces, organize his sets, build whatever he can imagine, and just enjoy being 14.
Because accessibility shouldn't only be about bathing, transferring, getting through a doorway, or getting into a vehicle.
It should also be about living.
It should mean having hobbies. Creating things. Leaving the house. Being included. Having independence wherever possible. And having a space in your own home that feels completely yours.
I've been home caring for Connor while completing the training necessary to become his caregiver. During this transition, I've been without income, while our family's accessibility needs have continued to grow.
So I'm doing something that's difficult for me: I'm asking for help.
Our $28,000 goal will go toward:
A motorized Hoyer lift for safer, more comfortable transfers
A permanent wheelchair-accessible entrance to our home
A wheelchair carrier/transportation solution for my vehicle
Connor's accessible LEGO and activity space
Additional accessibility modifications that will benefit Connor now and help prepare our home for Hudson in the future
If insurance, assistance programs, or other resources cover any portion of these needs, the funds raised here will be used toward the remaining accessibility projects for the boys.
Duchenne takes away enough. I don't want an inaccessible home or lack of equipment to take away anything more.
I can't change their diagnosis. I can't control what Duchenne may bring next.
But I can keep fighting to give my boys as much independence, dignity, comfort, joy, and access to the world as possible.
