We all hope, pray, cross our fingers etc. that life will go easy on us...that our hardships and challenges will stay at a minimum. The thing is, life is unpredictable. We only have so much control of things. So when life changing, difficult times come, we brace ourselves, try to gather our strength and pull our loved ones close. But sometimes that isn't enough. Sometimes we need to call out for the helpers and expand our tribe.

This is now the case for my cousin Liz and her family. Matt, Liz and Melanie have already had their share of challenges and loss. Matt has Stage 4 Pancreatic cancer that has metastasized. He was recently supposed to switch his treatment to a medical trial but was instead hospitalized for a week with blood clots in his kidney. They are hopeful he will be starting immunotherapy this month instead of chemotherapy.

Matt's sister passed away shortly after Matt and Liz's daughter Melanie was born. Before passing though, she participated in a medical research for EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus). Little did she know at the time that this would eventually help to diagnose her niece with a genetic mutation IRF8. This means that if Melanie ever gets Epstein-Barr Virus (which 90% of the population have), she will get Lymphoma (cancer).

As stressful and scary as this diagnosis was, it has answered so many questions for them. Years of helplessly watching Melanie fight colds, chest infections and so many hospital stays...to no avail. But they now have a chance of giving her a healthier life. As parents and grandparents, if we had an option to possibly intervene before the cancer, wouldn't we all?

So now, while still fighting for Matt to have extra time here with his wife and daughter, the Sallese family begin another huge battle. They need our help...whether you know them personally or not, I'm sure we can all put ourselves in their shoes.

This next, very important step will begin with a stem cell/bone marrow transplant. This will reset Melanie's immune system and hopefully she will never have to be hospitalized for anything regarding this again. It may sound like a simple process but it's anything but easy. Thankfully, Liz has been matched as Melanie's bone marrow donor. This checked off the first step for them!

Melanie was admitted October 13th. She has a central line placed and has just had laparoscopic surgery to preserve an ovary. At 8 years old, her parents are taking the very responsible and loving decision to do this so that she can choose to have children (or not) someday in the future. Unfortunately none of this is covered by insurance. Melanie then heads up to the transplant floor and will start chemotherapy. Retrieving an ovary now is because with having and after chemo, the Dr.'s tell Liz and Matt that Melanie will not be able to have children naturally.

Liz's bone marrow will be harvested on October 25th and given to Melanie. Melanie will then stay inpatient for 6 weeks. After that, she will not be able to attend school or do any activities for 6 months. To an 8 year old, this may prove to be the most challenging part of the journey. The long term result will obviously be so worth it though.

I'm speaking for all of Liz and Matt's immediate and extended family in anticipation of this long, difficult road....If you are able to reach out to them in any form, it would be so appreciated. Ways to help are: Sharing this fundraiser link, donating to this fundraiser or to

Well, both Melanie and her Dad’s updates aren’t exactly what we were hoping for but strength and fighting are in their DNA. We are constantly hoping, praying and wishing for their health and recovery….and at this point a flippin break for them. Please continue to share this fundraiser, donate, send cards…anything helps. We love you Sallese Family!

Day +21
One small good piece of news is Melanie can finally leave her room again.
The doctors were positive about her recovery until this morning. Her Absolute Neutrophil Count went down today after a slow increase the last two days. They believe the rhinovirus is still affecting her, causing her numbers to stall. We thought we might be discharged early next week but it doesn’t look like it now. They’re scheduling a bone marrow procedure similar to what I did but less painful, probably tomorrow.
Matt has no word of being discharged either. His doctor found fluid around his heart that they can’t drain because of where it is. Without his oxygen tank his level dips in the mid 80s. Still waiting to hear what their plan is for the cancer and blood clots.
Please pray and send good vibes to my family, it’s getting to be too much. I just want the three of us to be home together healthy.

Hello! Here’s the latest update from Liz regarding Melanie and her husband, Matt. πŸ’•

Yesterday morning Matt woke up not being able to breathe, went in for radiation, was sent to the ER and then admitted. His doctor thought his horrible breathing was the cancer spreading and clots in his lungs. He tested positive for rhinovirus; radiation and scans today. He felt horrible being at Melanie’s bedside not knowing that’s what it was. Melanie’s doctors say she’s not carrying any viruses thankfully. She had an MRI last night after having a couple episodes of mental confusion, not knowing where she was. MRI was okay and they don’t need to do anymore neurological testing at this time.

Day +15
Pain level and nausea are much better today, still not eating actual food really. Still no signs of engraftment, hoping within the next week. Melanie got platelets this morning and has slept most of the day so far. She’s very concerned about her daddy being held overnight at his hospital. The child life specialist has become Melanie’s favorite person and has helped her so much to cope πŸ’—

Noggins are shaved πŸͺ’ and future puppy is found! 🀎

Thank you for donating, sharing and sending packages/love/prayers!! They are all so appreciated! I believe we are creeping up on one month in the hospital for Melanie. πŸ’• This has just been a portion of her long road. It’s not too late to share this fundraiser again or to donate! Thank you!!!

From Liz, Melanie’s Mom:

Day +12
No hair but much for comfortable for Melanie! Also, I just put a deposit on a sweet 6 month old long haired dachshund in Maine. The breeder says they are in no rush to get rid of her and are willing to keep her until we’re discharged and home!!

Hello everyone! Here’s today’s update on Melanie and how she’s doing/feeling. 😞 It’s hard to remember that the misery will be worth it and that much harder for a kiddo to understand. Liz is asking for help in finding a mini dachshund for Melanie as a source of support once she’s home from the hospital. If you know Melanie, you know how much she LOVES animals! Please remember to share this post! Thank you!!

Day +11
Melanie’s immune system is at its very weakest. No pictures, she’s been completely miserable. The nausea is under control and pain is slightly better than the last two days, but sleeping on and off all night and day in short spurts. She’s lost more than half of her hair and decided she will shave it tomorrow when her favorite staff member, the child life specialist, will help as she does with most kids. Melanie is going to shave my head first, the least I can do to make her feel a tiny bit better.
Also, looking for leads on a mini dachshund, preferably long haired. Melanie has been begging for a dog since Buddy died. Our landlord has already said we definitely can have one and I’ve been searching nonstop. Her doctor said we should get one that is 4+ months old that’s already had multiple vaccinations, or to wait 6 more months after discharge for a newer puppy. Melanie wants one as soon as we’re home and doesn’t care the age, just under a year. I’m mainly looking in New England so that I can go in person, there’s so many scams online. I’ve found a few AKC registered breeders with some but the puppies will be too young for us. Please let us know if you have any leads!!

Hello everyone! Your generosity and love are immeasurable! Please keep sharing Melanie’s Spotfund. They still have weeks and weeks and weeks to stay at the hospital. Thank you all!! Her address is in the previous update if you’d like to send her some cheer!

Here is a little update to Melanie’s progress from her Mom, Liz. πŸ’•

Day +8
Melanie wanted me to share a picture of the feeding tube, this was her least miserable picture, minutes before she fell asleep sitting up. The sores in her mouth and throat are getting worse so she doesn’t have to eat real food now. She got blood this morning to help with her numbers and has been sleeping most of the day from the morphine.
