The Zika virus - a disease carried by mosquitoes that has been linked to birth defects and deaths in newborns - has now arrived in the U.S.
On May 20, the Centers for Disease Control reported that the number of pregnant women in the United States infected with the Zika virus had tripled from 48 to 157.
Zika has had a much more devastating impact elsewhere in the Americas. More than 1.5 million people have been infected in Brazil, the country most impacted by the outbreak. Officials are concerned about the potential impact of Zika on the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Since 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) has worked to promote awareness and eliminate disease. The WHO has launched a global plan to aid nations in combating the Zika virus, fast-tracking research and developing vaccines.
Please help the fight against Zika by donating to the WHO through the United Nations Foundation.
