As a defensive back for the New Orleans Saints from 2000-2008, Steve Gleason will always be remembered for his blocked punt on the night the New Orleans Superdome reopened for the first time after Hurricane Katrina.
But at the age of 34, Gleason was diagnosed with ALS and given a life expectancy of two to five years. Weeks later, Gleason found out his wife, Michel, was expecting their first child.
Gleason began to record a video journal as a gift for his unborn son. The journal chronicles Steve’s determination to get his relationships in order, build a foundation to provide other ALS patients with purpose, and adapt to his declining physical condition while utilizing medical technologies that offer the means to live as fully as possible.
On July 29, "Gleason" - the hit documentary from the 2016 Sundance Film Festival that draws from this video journal - will arrive in theaters nationwide.
Steve and his friends and family started Team Gleason to generate public awareness for ALS, raise funding to empower those with ALS to live a rewarding life, and ultimately find a cure.
