Lilian is a 39-year-old Lebanese mother and survivor of unimaginable abuse and hardship. Forced into marriage at just 13 years old due to her family’s extreme poverty, she endured years of domestic violence and marital rape from a husband 10 years older. She bore three children under these horrific conditions, and despite many attempts to escape, she stayed out of fear of leaving her children behind.
After years of abuse, her husband brutally broke her back when she insisted on working to support herself. That was the breaking point. Lilian fled to safety and, with help from the U.S. Embassy, was granted a humanitarian visa to come to the United States with her youngest son.
Now living in Paterson, NJ, Lilian finally got her CDL Licence and became a bus driver during the school year. Despite her determination, she earns under $$500 weekly, and receives no government assistance, as she doesn’t yet qualify for benefits due to her immigration status. Her English is limited, and she has no formal education beyond 8th grade, but she is working hard every day to change her life.
Lilian currently owes over $9,000 in rent and is at serious risk of being evicted.
She and her 10-year-old son live in a small basement apartment, and without urgent help, they may soon be homeless. Her summer income has stopped with the school year ending, and her rent continues to accumulate.
