#2 Traveling to Cusco, Peru for Spanish Immersion Learning for Two Months & Support Request!
This past week, I completed my Clinical Pastoral Education Chaplaincy Residency at Duke Regional Hospital! It has been one of the most challenging years of my life, a year of learning so much about myself and from the people I met at the hospital, and of learning to honor the dignity of each and every person right where they are. I’m deeply grateful for my cohort of peers and for everyone who supported me through the rollercoaster of this year. I’m relieved the year is complete, and I’m looking ahead to pursuing spiritual care in less crisis-oriented settings such as retirement communities, rehab, and hospice when I return to Durham.
Later this month, I’ll travel to Cusco, small city nestled high in the mountains of Peru for about two months to immerse myself by studying Spanish at Mundo Antiguo Spanish School and staying with a host family. I’ll spend weekday mornings in small group classes with just three other students, then carry what I’m learning into the streets, markets, and conversations around me! I’ll be staying with a local host family who speaks limited English, sharing meals and daily life with them. On weekends, I hope to take day trips into the mountains and practice Spanish on winding roads, in small cafés, and under wide Andean skies. This trip is a dream I’ve carried for a long time: to learn Spanish so I can better connect with people in Durham in their heart language.
