About a week ago, my mom called to let me know my childhood dog was going to the emergency vet as she wasn't doing well. Gumdrop was my first dog, she's been by my side since I was 11 and helped me through some very tough times in my life.
She had to be put down today at 16 years old due to adrenal tumors and acute pancreatitis. My mom has spent the last week taking the best care of her, staying up all night with her and trying to get her to eat.
Anyone that's ever met Gumdrop has been thoroughly entertained and changed for life. She was the silliest little teddy bear dog, and she acted like a puppy up until the end. She was completely deaf and half blind, and was as hardheaded as they come, but also the smartest dog I've ever met. She loved long walks where she could run in endless circles (I've had many rope burns from her leash catching my legs as she ran around me). She knew sign language, and could sit, shake, lie down, look wherever you pointed, and knew you were saying hi if you waved at her.
She loved head and back rubs, barking at nothing, chasing the outdoor cats and any bikers thay rode by us, stealing her brother's food, playing, going to visit her grandparents, and above all, she loved my mom.
The vet fees are over $7,500. We tried everything we could to get her better so she could have a few more good days with my mom. I know times are tough right now, but if you could donate any amount (even a dollar), my family and I would be forever grateful. As many know, pets change our lives for the better, but they leave massive holes in our hearts when they can't stay with us. Gumdrop left the best memories and gave us so much love.
Thank you for your support and for reading. Please hug your pets extra tight for me tonight.
