My name is Autumn. I am a 36-year-old mother living in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I am reaching out to my community today with deep vulnerability to ask for your help in overcoming a severe health crisis that has impacted every part of my life.
My dental health struggles began in 2017 during my pregnancy, when I developed a severe calcium deficiency that rapidly demineralized my teeth. Over the following years, despite my best efforts at daily oral hygiene, my teeth began breaking apart in fragments. The constant, unbearable pain forced me to miss work, skip school, and miss out on precious moments with my young son. By 2023, I had lost all of my upper teeth.
Living without top teeth for nearly two years has taken an overwhelming toll on my physical and mental health. Eating solid food has become impossible, forcing me onto a soft diet that causes frequent digestive illness, nausea, chronic fatigue, and weight gain. Without structural support from my teeth, my facial bone structure is progressively collapsing. This physical decline has coincided with deep personal grief—including losing my father, my beloved aunt, and a close friend to street violence—as well as losing my job as a home health aide after my client passed away.
Despite these hurdles, I am determined to rebuild my life. I am currently enrolled in school taking out student loans just to support my family, but I cannot afford the complex dental restoration required to make me whole again.
