This morning, in the usual bustle of the shopping center parking lot, my car refused to start. For many, it's an inconvenience, but for me, it's the potential loss of both home and work. My car isn't just a vehicle; it's been my home for the past year here in Northern Virginia. As a delivery driver, it's also my livelihood. I've tackled many car troubles in the last year— new used tires, new radiator, new battery, new rear window, new front window regulator, and fixing front brakes—never asking for help financially and DIY as I am able. But now, facing engine repairs, towing, and inspection costs, I'm at a loss. The broken door handle is probably the least of current repair expenses, which amount to $2,500, and the income I once relied on is shrinking rapidly with more delivery drivers, many from DC and Maryland, entering the area. I've always prided myself on staying independent, working hard, living frugally, and even helping others when possible. Now, I'm at a crossroads where my resources have run out. The fear of losing both my shelter and job is overwhelming.
Reaching out for help is not easy for me, but the kindness of others is something I'm learning to embrace. I truly need support to help my car back on the road and regain the stability that seems to be slipping away. It’s a vulnerable place to be, but I’m hopeful for a bit of grace to keep moving forward.
