About two years ago, our beloved grandpa, Brent Hopper, was diagnosed with liver cancer. From that moment on, he showed us what real strength looks like. Brent worked tirelessly to get healthier, never giving up, never losing his sense of humor, and always pushing forward. By his side through it all was his wife, Carolyn Johnson, whose love, devotion, and support never wavered. Together, they faced every challenge hand in hand.

Brent was one of those rare people who made everyone feel loved and welcome. He was funny, caring, and genuinely one of the best humans you could ever meet. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, uncle, and brother, and his presence filled every room. He taught us to be proud of our last name, proud of our family, and proud of who we are. His impact on our lives is something we will carry with us forever.

About two weeks ago, Brent’s health suddenly took a turn for the worse. He became very sick and was admitted to the ICU on Sunday, 2/2/26. Even then, he fought with the same strength he always had. Surrounded by love, he held on until Wednesday 2/4/26, when he peacefully passed at 9 am in her daughters arms at the University of Chicago.

Our family is heartbroken and now navigating the difficult days that come with this loss. We are asking for help to honor Brent’s wishes and to cover funeral arrangements and the legal expenses that follow. Any donation, no matter the size, truly helps, and prayers and kind thoughts mean just as much to us.

Thank you for helping us honor Brent Hopper and for keeping our family—especially Carolyn—in your prayers during this incredibly hard time.
